I too have only seen the trailers. I did see a show about Alaska's bears a few months ago and they had a little snippit of him and what he was doing.
I don't think he had both oars in the water....
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 'ledge'. If you mean you can see and feel a sharp 'ridge'? Are you letting any flexcoat go from the wrap directly on the blank?
I generally let it go 1/16"...
I'm not a guide either, but the thought has crossed my mind. I have been self-employed most of my adult life [operating my own truck] which is no picnic. Before I bought my first truck I asked alot...
Isn't that funny how you struggle to learn how to do something, and before you know it you can practically do it in your sleep. I'm sure your son will cherish that rod.
The first couple of rods I...
WarrenP, I've done that on a few rods, it does look sharp.

To fish or not to fish?
What a stupid question.
Nice work, I've done a few inlays using color preserver, my problem has been getting the feather to stay with the contour of the rod, the ends like to stickout. I'm gonna try your method. Thanks

I agree with tyflier, you can rotate the top 3 sections if you want to. It is not crucial that the spine aligns with the spine of the butt section [if you can even locate it]. like you said the butt...
Forecast RX6 blank to be specific. These are awesome blanks for a fraction of the cost of winston. I have a 5wt. and love it. I've also built several others for some very satisfied customers.

HideHunter,I live east of Hibbing in Silver Bay. There's plenty of ice up here but...lots of slush on top of it. It's been in the high twenties and low thirties for a couple of weeks now. Normally...
Thank you.

Guide spacing. It's not that hard really, my problem was pulling to hard on the line when the guides were taped on and checking for proper spacing, I'd pull them off.
Starting the wraps.

Jim, agood book on fly rods is 'Handcrafting a Graphite Fly Rod' by L.A. Garcia. Published by Frank Amato Publications who publishes many fly fishing books as you may already know.
It is very...
You're in trouble now Jim. Like tying flies, rod building is addictive. But don't worry, we'll help you fuel this addiction. lol.
Seriously, if you plan on building many rods [and you will] you'll...
That's awesome.
The forecast blanks are tough to beat for the money. I have a 8' 6" 5wt that I really like. I have built several others for customers and they are all very satisfied. They are a slower action than...
Very interesting topic. I have been either in trucking or logging since finishing high school 25 years ago. Started out logging and worked my way into driving the trucks. I hauled logs in MN, Ontario...
Thank you Bill, you have some GREAT products and every time I call with a question everybody is very helpful. Way to go.
One other thing about syringes. If the kit you ordered does not have them included for some reason or another. Don't use just any syringe or plastic mixing cups from the local drug or craft store....
Son, practicing on arrows is an excellant idea. For mixing epoxy and finish use syringes, as long as you don't get them mixed up you can use them over and over and you get a precise measurement. Also...
I went out today and found lots of hard water, about 6 - 8" of it. Didn't fish though...it's so dang hard to do a decent strip in a 10" dia hole.

Ahhh...the cat. I had put the coating on the threads of a rod and left it turning over night. When I checked it the next morning the cat had rubbed against the butt wrap. I think you know what it...
Way to go. But I gotta warn you rodbuilding is very addictive. You can use a drill for a lathe motor. Just about any rodbuilding supply catalog will have roller supports for the blank.

Boy, this guy's good...NOT!
The sad thing is people will fall for it.
