Its been a long time since I've posted anything, haven't been able to fish much (every additional kid we have takes up more time, but I'll trade the fishing for time with them). But I still manage a...
Great Pictures!
My parents made the annual trek up there, but we had to stick at home. I love that last shot
Quick point of clarification on casting past fish.... you'll find out very quickly they're not dumb. If you pull a woolly bugger or some other crayfish pattern towards the fish, they'll freak.
Just stirring the pot a little....
Who cares if there's no direct application for the cast itself? It becomes an exercise in coordination then, like all ball-handling tricks basketball players...
I thought this was fun to watch, and messing around with a few of these might enhance my understanding of line control:

Another "light bulb" moment for me was learning to be more efficient with my false casts. When I started, I don't think I ever cast without three or four back casts involved.
Watching and Reading...
Thanks for all the great articles, Joe, and remember you haven't burnt any bridges.
Since no one has mentioned Global Dorber, I don't know if you could find a better panfish rod at such a low price. Nice flex, and you can't beat the price.
Love their rods.
I've got an outfit I use almost exclusively for carp (7wt, large arbor reel), so if I didn't just put new line on it, I'd probably take a very close look at purchasing this product. I actually put a...
In my pre fly days, on Lake of the Ozarks, I had a bluegill jump out of the water and land on a rock where I had miscast my mepps spinner.
Or watching a carp temporarily beach itself, going after...
Nice pics. Interesting scenery there.
Nice fish brhoff!
All our rivers (and even a lot of small creeks) in Chicago are still too high and muddy. Fished a small creek this week that we killed the smallies on a month ago, and we had to...
That's fantastic. There are quite a few generous folks operating on this board, including our hosts!
Got out myself to fish a new creek in the Chicago area on Thursday night. Cleaned up on small bass 9 - 13" all evening with my dad. Even though it was shallow top water was also not producting like...
The other thing you can play with is the extreme close up shots, of some nice scales or tail. Those turn out pretty good as well.
maybe you should clean your toenails occasionally : )
Great pics, brings back great memories of similar waters.
I think you're pretty limited to fish in hand or lying next to rod pictures if you're by yourself (besides a variety of scenic or widlife pics you can take as well, been loving the rod/reel in...
I tell my wife that if I'm running late, the fishing is probably really good. Or the fishing is poor and I'm just being stubborn. Either way, I'm pretty much never home on time.
I love seeing these urban rivers getting some positive attention. I've never "slayed" 'em on the Olentangy, but I've had great days exploring that river, catching a few fish (deer crossing the river...
Those 'tangy carp give me heart attacks. I've been wading several times, and have had unseen ones go airborne a few feet away when I spooked 'em (I mean, really, would they be the perfect game fish...
I had a hunch it was something like that. Looking forward to the next chapter.
Thanks!
raw69, the reason your carp might not have run as far, is that it was in moving or shallow water. Although some folks have had different experiences, my pond/lake fish have always put me into the...
Good read ronP. I noticed you didn't list woolly buggers or poppers in the fly list, however. I know you can substitute some of the other streamers for the bugger, and the dries for the popper, but...
I love that word, "gloaming". I think it should be part of every fisherman's lexicon.
