make some foam beetles for sure. you can fish them for hours and hours before needing to apply any sort of floatant or switching to a new one. i've caught over 75 gills/bass (almost all gills) one...
i've been fly fishing for 2 years now and it's not much of a list but i've caught:
rainbow trout
brown trout
brook trout
different kinds of sunfish
bluegill
largemouth bass
smallmouth bass...
i would also reccomend elk hair caddis, woolly buggers, and an adams or parachute adams. these patterns are all a little bit harder to tie than san juan worms and foam beetles though.

i would say fish for what you want to catch. if you want to catch perch and walleye on the fly then go for it. what i usually do if i am trying to catch a species of fish that i haven't been catching...
