Most material does not get old. We have 80 years worth of material and it is all still usable even the oldest stuff. A lot of times for use the oldest material is junk because the good stuff was all...

Most people use rooster saddles for wolly buggers, but for small buggers a hen saddles makes a nice soft body hackle.

Gandolf,
I could not agree more. There are a few colors of superfine I like, but I find furs dub better. Dyed Beaver is great for dries and rabbit can be good to if you get a blend with the guard...
If you breed a chicken for smaller hackle your spades are going to get smaller too. This can be seen most of all on the saddle spades.
The Collins spades are great, but they are not from the neck...
Illegal to pick them up? Is that a local law? Canada Geese feathers are legal to possess almost everywhere.
Joe
There is no Twin Pines, there was a Twin Islands.
On the lower Beaverkill there Roscoe Campground, Butternut Grove, and Russel Brook Campground (just off the Beaverkill on a VERY nice trib)....
I would not over look streamers. Very slow strips or just drifting them can be very effective if you can get it to where the fish is holding.
I take alot more time finding ideal conditions. Trout...
I agree with high fines but gear? That could mean $1000's for one person and $100's for another with both breaking the same law.

Almost each river has its own proper ettiquite.
Around here on the smaller streamers as long as your are about 100ft apart or can't cross fly lines you are fine.I do not think car claims a spot,...
Taking their gear seems a bit much. A large fine seems better $100 per fish or something like that. This might drive them to return to fishing but stay within regs.

The biggest hurting us here in New York are the high taxes that feel like they give little return. This have a greater effect on upstate NY then it does NYC & Long Island due to various reason and I...
I am not a big fan. They do not last long and are trouble prone.
For that price point the griffin 1A or 2A are great vises. They hold hooks very well, made in the States, and Griffin backs their...
We keep going back to Calf Body hair. It is very easy to see, does not absorb water easily, and durable. There are a few patterns we use something else, Isonychia (I have a antron that is a great...
Contact the grower. Twisting hackle is something most growers fight the best they can but when it comes down to it they are dealing with an animal and there will be flaws among some bird despite the...
There is a product called "Bug Balmer" produced by Wind River. It tends to retail for $6 to $7 for 8 oz. and will keep your bugs much longer then rubbing alcohol.
Just to let you know, many states...
Cortland has made a number of changes to the line since it's release because of the feedback they received from users. I can say that the Sylk lines being produced now are much better then the first...
I have always gotten a kick out of that. Alot of people make a huge deal about floating wings, but if you have a parachute or a upright wing dry the wings should not be under the water.
Our most...
About 5% of calf tails are truly suitable for dry fly wings. You need to look for straight hair with a nice tip. When you find a good one there is few things better, it becomes very easy to tie with...
Kanasan B405 would be a suitable replacement for Mustad 94838 I think.
The specs seem to be the same but that does not mean alot.

Still made in sizes 6 - 10.
We use a 94840 for Flick's Variants, we also have samples tied by Flick and they are not tied on short shank hooks.

It is wonderful stuff. We have been using it here since it came out for size 20 flies and smaller. Takes a marker well, not as much stretch as other that fine, and is the same material as 8/0 uni but...
When it comes to badgers, furnaces, coch-a-bondhu, and greenwills (golden badger with no black tips) breeders are lasy about looking close at the hackle to give it a real color grade. All of these...
I tend to put Royal Wulffs with white wings, Fan-Wing Royal Coachmans, Coffin Fly, and White Wulffs.
Light color and multi color flies can be seen best. Dark flies can be very hard to see, more so...
Most of the oldest "soft hackles" fished around here were tied with the low grade rooster hackle. There are a number I still tie that way because of tradition. Orange Fish Hawk comes to mind, heavy...
I use spur varnish on the head of my dry flies, it is a real old pratice and work better then any other cement because of how it penetrates. For wets, streamers, and nymphs I use lacquer.
