The general response here has been similar to Lastchance's, some heated. There has been articles and many posts here over the years. For more acceptance and technical discussions, do a search over...
Another option is to add some tinsel when spinning the green deer hair for the tree to add the ornaments.
Thread/epoxy winding checks can look great. Looks better up close. As you can see on my 8wt, epoxy errors can stand out.

I enjoy custom grips. I believe it is the only way to get a grip that fits my hands. Who has the "universal standard size" hand any way?
For years I have felt the grading system has been...
Scondolf,
there is a program at http://www.rodbuildingforum.com/index.php?showforum=9
in the guide spacing forum, thread 55 references a boo program, and 69 a graphite program.
I have made many cases also. I never liked the screw on caps. I feel they are too bulky, but checking them for a flight can be unpleasant. I had a cap come off and my 2wt was flopping around half...
I also use the elastic string. You can also find it at WallyWorld in the crafts dept, beading section.
I use a drill motor for my lathe. I put a sewing machine foot peddle on it so I could have hands free operation with speed control.
I bought pullies from McMaster-Carr, some are available at the...
I never could file out a round hole, always lopsided. If you have an old blank of a suitable diameter, apply some adhesive backed sand paper and ream away. Clean out the seat well, the loose grit...
I was quite lucky when I started rod building. There was a do-it-your-self shop in town. The owner would sell you the components and provide the usage of the shop, consumables, and coaching to...
Take your time on the wrapping. Make sure it is as close to perfect as you think you can get before you apply the epoxy. Easy to back up before the epoxy. Practicing on a dowel could help. Also,...
My drill motor also has a locking switch. I turn my cork on the blank. Never had any issues with the blank splitting. A little thread wrapping at the end helps.
I tape up an old epoxy brush...
Jim,
I'm glad I am not the only one using adhesive backed sand paper as a reamer. Not as easy to find as it once was, so, next "rebuild", will be of the non-slip variety.
Lotech,
You need to right click on the link and select "copy link location"
doing so you get http://www.flyanglersonline.com/prorevw ... elube.html
On a cane rod, varnish is the traditional finish. Graphite rods usualy get an epoxy finish.
I never understood copying a factory rod. What's custom about that?
fanny pack that holds 2 water bottles, 3 fly boxes, camera, etc. I may move my forcep zinger to the buckle side, tired of reaching around to get it every 3rd fish.

The thrill is not in the kill. It's in the deception.
danbob,
If you want to scrounge, look for a sewing machine foot pedal. Hook it up to your drillmotor, and voila, foot controled variable speed lathe motor. Oh, old skate wheels make great rollers....
Sorry this a late post, but what ever method you choose to get the run out, tape the blank on either side. Masking tape is truly the rod builders best friend.
On starting and positioning the...
I spent a Month in the suburbs of Chicago last year. I passed at least a dozen ponds on the way to the jobsite without a rod that would fit in a suitcase. After i got home, I picked up a 7.5 ft,...
all the thread before the guide does nothing to the integrity of the wrap. It just adds weight. I have my wraps down to 2 turns plus a single trim wrap before climbing up the foot.
