Ray,
Gave the orange dye a try and it worked out pretty good. I only had fluroescent orange by Veniard and used that. Not an exact match, but close.
This will make using those tippets for...
Thanks all. Very useful information.
Since I am tying for myself, Wood Duck will probably work just fine. It would be nice to duplicate as called for in the patterns, but as with salmon flies...
Just began dyeing some feathers and came up with a system that works for me.
Since I only wanted to dye a few feathers and not waste a bunch of the dye this is how I did it. This using RIT powder...
Been tying some Bergman wets and in looking over the pattern tables noted that Barred Mandarin is used for some wings.
How much different is the Mandarin from Wood Duck. It looks like it more...
Ray,
That sounds like a great idea. What brand and color of dye did you use to match the orange of the feathers?

I am going to try the crazy glue method since when I tried the V and fold I still did not get the even results even when using the pinch. Maybe the glue keeps the barbs in line.
Ron's method...

I gave the 'roll' a try and it seemed to work out pretty good. The roll was more of a fold and about half the barbs went to the other side. I held that and tied to the hook using a 'pinch'. ...
Will give it a try Ron.
Thanks
Bugsy I tried your suggestion and it was a tad better, but still not the results I would like to see.
It may be that you just don't get it to do both sides at once.
I also tried using the...
When tying in golden pheasant tippet tails, the bright orange side will be on one side only and usually a few twisted barbs show on the 'good' side.
How do you get the bright orange on both sides?...
I have found that if you soak the wings in really hot water for an hour or so, you can pull the primaries section away from the other secondaries and coverts. Then I clip the two sections apart. ...
Two dvd's that I have (AK Best and Don Bastion)both say that the dubbing wax belongs on you thumb and finger and just a little bit. Try that along with the small amount at time suggestions above and...
Use a bottle neck stretcher of course.
Thanks for the info AK.
I would not want to spend that kind of $$, but with all the video stuff out there today that is less expensive something similar may be possible.
Don't know if I will...
Darn it Betty, you would have to tell me that.
Now I gotta go and glue on an extra barb on all my 16 barbers!
Always tie em by the tip and strip one side. These flies are supposed to be tied sparse. Just tied some partridge and yellows a few weeks ago and they really came out nice.

I had the progessive lenses for years, but always had problems with them. The company I worked for got me started using them when we went to CAD (computer drafting). They were OK, but I...
In your video on dry flies you use a small video camera. I was thinking about that the other night and was wondering if such a set-up along with a small TV could be used as an aid for tying. My...
Thanks ducksterman. I did not look in Ed's Specials but did check the catalog.
Ordered the skin and got a bobwhite skin for soft hackles while there.
Thanks
Bob
I have been looking for some nice guinea wing feathers to use on wet flies. They seem to be hard to find as I have not seen any listed in my catalogs. I found one listing for guinea skins but the...
Thanks for the replies.
The chart showing the different use areas from the skins may come in handy if my deer hunting freinds from PA ever offer me a skin.
Will have to give Chris a call. He...
A.K. Best mentions Gretzen deer hair in one of his books that I have (Production Fly Tying, I think) and in his video Tying Dry Flies. I have not seen any catalog or online mention of this hair...
Just got the hen pheasant wings from the falconer guy yesterday and am very pleased with them. Nice matched set of wings and in very good shape.
Why is it so hard to find good quality in such...
Thanks for the info on the feathers.
I did find a source, but it is not a fly-tying outfit. Found them at [url=http://www.mikesfalconry.com:e5a3a]www.mikesfalconry.com[/url:e5a3a] and he sells...
