They had models 13, 14, and 15, in increasing order (I think) of quality of hardware. At least that's how I understand it.
It does appear to be an HI number. "14" is the model number in terms of quality; "8 1/2" is the length. I have no idea what the 5 meant, but it probably wasn't a line weight. AFTMA line weights...

If you mean under a dry fly, no. Usually part of a team of wets, and usually at point. Under trees, the ant gets most of the attention.
