I've also read a lot about modern Native American reservations...some of them have no problem taking toxic waste and storing it...don't know if they are still inclined to do that today or not. Probably anything for $.
Mostly, I'm worried about the water quality in the area around the casinos, especially if they are close to any of the rivers.
Urban vs. Rural is a big "problem". There are many environmental activists in the cities, but the problem is, it's not in their back yard. Many of those people are willing to sacrifice environmental quality for economic growth, as long as they can go visit the Catskills and be able to gamble in the same trip!

Well, the Sullivan County Legislature apparently cancelled the meeting the other day (they were going to vote on the 0 or 5 casino vote). Now the Natural Resources Defense Council is demanding a full environmental impact study for the casinos, so that is a good thing. Previously, there was no thought about anything environmental as far as I could tell.

Spud,
Here in western Wyo., we don't have casino's as much as oil adn gas development. Being 80 or 90% federal lands,we face much the same if not bigger problems when it comes to fighting over development.
So far our fishing hasn't been effected by the Jonah field near Pinedale Wyo. But I am sure that all the roads built there will have some effect come spring after all the snow that is here melts..
Good luck, will keep prayers going and look for future updates

Well, five casinos in the Catskills have been approved. I'm very disappointed in the legislature.

Spud,
Been reading posts about casinos and didn't feel too much alarm at the prospect. Now that it has occurred, (and I thought it wouldn't) I have a sinking feeling in my stomach! Being an optimist I look for the positive. There will be jobs available (at least for a while) in a depressed area. Can't think of any others. Oh yes...those nice buildings will make pretty good chicken coops when the business fails somewhere down the road.

I'm going to remain vigilant against these casinos. Even if they do go in, enough opposition will put a lot of pressure on them to behave (environmentally at the very least).
1 or 2 casinos would bring jobs...5 is overkill. I personally think they are biting off more than they can chew!!!
