Two trees growing next to each other in the forest, one a beech, the other a birch.
After decades of living next to each other in peace, they notice a small sapling growing between them
Of course, both trees proudly began claiming the tree as their progeny.
"Son of a Beech", one would claim.
"No, no, no," the other stated, "It's the son of a Birch!!"
The argument continued for days. Neither tree would budge an inch.
Finally, they agreed to let the woodland animals decide.
The first animal to come by was a Rabbit. The trees asked the Rabbit to judge. The Rabbit stated, "What do I know from trees??" and hopped away.
Next to come scurrying by was a squirrel. When asked about the small tree, he replied, "If it had nuts, I would be able to tell you for sure, but without nuts, I am flumoxed. You should ask the woodpecker...he is the expert on trees."
When the Woodpecker flew by, the trees asked him to determine whether the youngling was birch or beech.
Woody checked the leaves, scratched the roots, sniffed the bark, and then tapped the tree with his beak. A broad smile crossed his face, and he told the bigger trees that he knew what the litte tree was without a doubt.
The Beech haughtily declared, " I know it's my son", to which the Woodpecker replied, " No way is this a beech"
Of course the Birch started crowing about how the little tree was a chip off the old block.
The Woodpecker told him that the sapling was not a Son of a Birch either...
Both of the larger trees were very confused, so they asked the Woodpecker to explain.
"The little tree is neither Birch nor Beech, but I gotta say that it is the nicest little piece of Ash I have ever put my pecker in."
