I have more reels than rods....how did that happen? Guess its time to shop for rods.
I think I finally wore out a Battenkill...at least the pawl may not be as sharp, it does not have the crisp sound it did.
USA Medalists, Okuma's, PBS Hobbs Creek, CFO's, B'Kills, Fin-Nor, Ballan and even a San Miguel, they all work, some just better than others.
Not to split hairs here but how many readily available $600 trout reels are out there?
I guess if you are talking about Bogden's and the like; yea they exist but in my fly shop world a top of the line reel is about $400-$500, maybe with $300 more like it.
I split my fishing between FW(bass, pickerel, carp, shad)and SW(stripers, blues, trout, flounder)so some reels do both jobs. They go from a Medalist to J Ryall,Hardy,Ross,up to Pate/Tibor.By far the reels that see the most action are my J Ryall's,my mid priced ones. They do everything the others do but weigh less and have excellent drags. The Hardy Lightweight reels also get a workout in FW.As with most things in life, its about wants, not about needs. Most people could get by just fine driving a second hand Ford Escourt but most dont.
I only fish with older US made Pflueger Medalists: 1494. 1495, 1495 1/2, and 1496 1/2. They do it all in fresh or saltwater, winter or summer. You can drop them, bang them on rocks, fish them below zero or above 110. If you keep them relatively clean and greased/oiled and keep the screws tight, you will never have a problem. You can still find them in pawn shops, garage sales, and on eBay for between $15 and $40 unless you want a circular round guard collectible and even then, a mint or near mint collectible will be less than $200.

SEE! I was right in spending my money on gunz instead of expensive fishing gear.

There is a fine line between fly fishing and standing in a river waving a stick, and YOU SIR have crossed that line!
I'm a tightwad.. I like the "good stuff" but hate parting with my hard earned $$$ to buy it. The most expensive reel I own is a Lamson Radius, which I thought only appropriate for the 4 wt Bamboo rod I WON!!! (that's the best way to get expensive stuff). I did just buy a Ross Flywater reel for my 3 wt. Really seems like a nice reel. I wouldn't expect less from Ross at any price. A Battenkill BBS rounds out my "expensive" reels. The workhorses on the 5 and 6 wts are Orvis Clearwater reels which I have been very happy with. Amazing how a $40 reel on a 5 wt. was able to handle what the guide said was a 7-8 lb. Brown in Arkansas this june without breaking 6X flourocarbon tippet during the 12 or so minutes I had him on. Only reason I lost the fish is because the "expensive" Tiemco hook straightened out on me. $600 Reels???? I guess if you have that kind of $$$ laying around to spend on them go for it. I like to find the cheap stuff that supposedly won't handle the jobs, and then try and make them handle the jobs anyway.

These are the idle thoughts that posses a man's mind when he's not able to fish.
I've got a CFO, a couple Battenkill, a Battenkill Barstock, and other "lovely" reels, but for down and dirty fishing I use an Okuma! A $600 reel? For that kind of info you'll need to talk to D.Micus!

for the salt i'd spend serious coin for a reel, even though that might ruin my reputation as a tight wad. I have an islander, beautiful reel, a penn international 2.5, another great reel, and an albright tempest, again, great reel. other good salt water reels are the billy pate and the abel (but without the disco paint). of these, which would be my first choice? the one on sale...i also have some redington rs2's and some orvis battenkills--ok for the small stuff but not good for the salt.
