wondering how the pmail works

I tried to pm a member that lives a couple hours from me. When I clicked "submit" it said it was submitted. The pm is now in my outbox, and is not in the sent mail folder. From the outbox I don't see any way to send it. I have pm'd before on the for sale page and I don't remember it doing this. Is there something I am missing?
