I've used cut up freezer bags. You can also buy scud-back material from a flyshop.

Jay,
Thanks. I would prefer not to buy if possible. I wanted to really know the gauge of the plastic weight.
Thanks again.

I just use those little baggies that tmc hooks come in.
More good input - thanks Mikeytwoshoes.
paflyfisher,
You can also use those disposable latex gloves that come in different colors. I always get them from my local Doctor's office when I am in there. They stretch also!

I use the ziplock sandwich bags to do scud backs. If you look colsely at the bags you will see that they appear to have a grain or knap in the plastic. You'll want to cut your strips so that you follow the grain, not cut against the grain. If you cut the strips against the grain, when you put a little tension on the bag when tying it down, it will stretch. Cutting with the grain doesn't cause any stretch. Usually the grain runs parallel to the zip lock.
unless you buy the flex material specifically for tying - the plastic you're adding is for that hardened / gloss appeal. The color comes from what you make the body from.
Look around home - see what you have. Noted materials above are great stuff.
Youdon'twant to go too heavy a plastic. Scuds are mostly smaller hooks, thicker material will cause unsightly ties.
darrell,
PaFlyFisher...
if it plastic or latex it can be used..
for instance..I have used..
plastic:
scudback.. from the fly shop (I think its more like latex)
thinskin.. from the fly shop (I think its more like latex)
the plastic off wrapping papper (X-mas or Bday)
plastic off boxes
sulaphin (sp?) from cigarette packs
any kind of plastic baggies
window plastic (when you cover your windows in the winter) NOTE: if you use the shrink kind.. clean your bench before starting the hair dryer.. I found this out the hard way!!LOL
as far as latex..
gloves,(sorry if this offends anyone).. But I have even used condoms (any color, just the non-lubicated workes the best.
Just about anything really can be use..
Hope this helps with some ideas for you
