Castwell's "I Liked Being There"In fact, I am embarrassed wh
Quote:
In fact, I am embarrassed when I tell a person that, "yes, I went, didn't catch anything, but had a fine time." Somehow, I feel they will not understand. And, conversely, somehow, I think you might.
JC - Great article and I especially liked the above quote. Maybe it is because I have been at this a long time too, but this really resonated with me. The older I get the more value I place on the "going" than the getting.

I find it odd that some people believe that in order to have an enjoyable time that fish must be caught. Not true. I have spent days without a singe strike, yet I would not trade those days for the world. You see I got up before the sun and watched it raise. I watched a hawk ride the thermals. I spent time with my dad and twin brother mostly in quite conversation. I worked on my line mending techniques.

I've found more recently (after a prolonged physical fitness campaign) that I seem to enjoy 'getting there' as much as 'being there,' and I definitely enjoy both of those things as much or more than catching fish! It's kind of nice to really do some backcountry travel up a canyon or valley to get to remote waters, or to go above treeline and discover a little hiden lake surrounded by tundra and rock. Good times.

HOLY MACKEREL (sp- doesn't look right) IT just came to me!!!!. THAT'S IT!!!! THAT'S where "fisherman are liars" comes from. We fishermen, in order to justify to the unwashed as to why we love fishing , have to ALWAYS tell "em" that we caught SOMETHING. We can't possibly explain that we went fishing again and again and didn't catch anything. It's much simpler to say "caught a buncha bigguns" than to explain the infatuation with the sport even on a fishless day. They just wouldn't understand. :)

PS: Apparently some of us got caught in the deception.

and just think, if they did understand,,, they would be out there cluttering up the environment. Count your blessings,,, and above all else; keep lying!
