monic fly line
my faithful airflo clear intermediate finally split (after 5 years of hard use), so i turned to the line box and spooled up a monic clear intermediate that i had purchased. i bought it based on a review in fly rod and reel that said 'this line has virtually no line memory, so there are no tangles' which is important in the salt when throwing a lot of line. anyway, it turns out to be the exact opposite (big surprise)--the line has the worst memory of any line i've ever seen. i've soaked it in warm water, stretched it, but the coils just won't disappear. it would be great line on a weed wacker (which is where it might end up) but terrible for fishing.

Is monic a brand name?? I have never heard of that before.

Was that the new "All Weather SPT?"

monic is a name brand. it wasn't the new spt, and i'm not exaggerating when i say i could use it for a slinky! i just don't get how the reviewer could give such a blatantly false endorsement.
-
As I recall the line was slightly sticky and didn't want to go through the guides well - sort of like bubble gum.

We broke the first one we had by "stretching" it. They replaced that one. The replacement we finally cut-up for shooting heads. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif

The 9wt clear floating line was recommended to me a couple years ago. I hated it, it shed a powdery substance and just constantly tangled. I brought it back and got a different line.
-
how do they stay in business? I wrote the company complaining but have yet to get a response.
-
Send it to me! With a black truck & the temperatures getting up to where the humidity is, the heat index will soften that line up & stretch it out like it should be; unless of course it's a coldwater line whereas you'll have to wait until the August/September temperatures to bake it limp.
-
trust me dave, you wouldn't want it. i think the line on my weed wacker would cast better.

The Monic flylines I have are all clear WF-F & the Airflo flylines are all clear WF-I. Only memory of coiling is when they have been on the reel for over a year & not stretched out in the sun & heat for an extended period of time. Next best cure: is that they were overheated in hot water while getting cleaned in a bathtub, whereas the bubblegum texture. Stretch it out & dress it up with line refurbishing liquid of choice & buff. Must have one big commercial weed-wacker !

Dave, you answered your own question about how they could endorse it when you mentioned the Mag..Fly Rod and Reel. Did you catch the issue about a year ago when the author said a small bluefish chomped down on a 1/0 stainless steel hook and cut it cleanly in two?1#@&*%??? You would think an editor would call the author and ask him if he had been self medicating...Instead, they chose to highlight that B.S. quote in italics next to a picture. Total loss of credibility. That was finis for me and that mag (glad I picked it up for nothing at the Bear's Den magazine swap..cause that what it's worth...NOTHING...ZIP, SQUAT, BUPKIS..)It just goes to prove my old fishing buddy's philosophy.."Believe nothing of what you hear, and half of what you see..." Better luck next time on the clear intermediate... Tight Lines, Jim

you know, Jim, you're absolutely right. this is the same mag that in the past has had 1)one of their editors win their fiction writing contest 2) Awarded Angler of the Year to Ted Turner for improving habitat (in other words, buying up land and keeping citizens off of it) and, most recently, 3) started a feature, "look who fly fishes" where we get to see, oh joy, a celebrity that fly fishes (because people magazine, extra, access hollywood, ad naseum, doesn't do a good enough job of pushing celebrities down our throats...).
