What are folks' opinions about the best Tiemco hook (what hook number?) for tying soft hackle wet flies? I was thinking maybe a #3769, but it may not have a long enough shank.
Many thanks for your ideas<

In Tiemco, I like the 9300 hook, but I prefer Daiichi 1550's or Alec Jackson North Country hooks distributed by Daiichi...
PT/TB
I like the Daiichi 1770 Swimming Nymph hook. Things are seldom straight in nature.
The trend is for shorter shank hooks than was traditional with North Country Spiders. They were tied on quite long shank hooks. The TMC 100s are about the proportions of the traditional hook. The problem though is that we now use eyed hooks, the originals were blind hooks. Do you go for an up eyed, down eyed or straight eye? I'm not sure. Mostly I go for straight eye.
This is on a straight eye Hyabusa All Purpose Light Barbless, and looks quite traditional to my eye. What the TMC equivalent is I don't know.

Does it matter? Not being wise ***, just wondering,
If you thinks it matters, and it affects the way you fish, then I guess it matters. I lean towards Dai Riki hooks because I like the quality and cost so I'd use either the 070 or 305 (Mustad 3906 or 7957B have worked, too). If you really want Tiemco, go with PT's suggestion of the 9300 or a Alan's for a 101.

Scott
right now , i use a tmc 2457, i tie a size 16 fly on a size 12 hook. the smaller body on a larger wide gap seems to have improved my hook up ratio.
My favorite is the tiemco 3769 spbl.
As with others, my preference is the TMC3769. The TMC3769SPBL is nice, but pricey for soft hackles. Tend to fish mine deep so I prefer the heavier hook.
TMC 200 R. All i have ever used.
