Top-Water Hat Trick
Attachment 13736
This evening, a small bit of local water gave up a top-water Hat Trick
It's not often many of the local ponds will give up all three on a given night, and even less often for it to be on surface poppers. Tonight however, all 3 came on a #6 Mule Deer Diver.

Congrats on your hat trick! :) That is something I have not seen in Iowa....PICKEREL! :)

I really miss Pickerel! Their slashing strikes are heart-stoppingly fast, like fresh water Barracuda. I've only seen one caught here in Georgia and the person had to ask me what it was. They call them Jacks here in the South and the are the smaller species Grass Pickerel which only grow to about 12 inches long. I grew up catching Chain Pickerel which get a bit larger up to 26-27 inches, although the largest I ever caught was around 22-23 inches long. Nice fly by the way. How did it hold up to the slashing teeth of the Pickerel?

I have caught Grass Pike in NC. Fond memories. You're right, they do get fun on the take. I saw the two that hit this popper coming from about 6ft away. The bulge in the water came strait out from under the lily pads. :)
Around here they seldom get over 20". But normally only take leeches and streamers. This popper did well. It's a tight clipped head. But it was all tangled up in the teeth each time.
