Have You seen the cover of Fly Fish America- 2006 Gear Guide? Wow...
Nope. No fish deserves to die just to make my wall pretty and to let me thump my chest. If I really need it on the wall, they have replica mounts.
Hi Backbeach,
I haven't seen it either!!! But instead of a replica wall mount I just mount a picture in my office. I think there is nothing better then taking along a camera and getting that once in a lifetime picture. This salmon was 44" long and weighed around 30 Lbs.

Thanks,

Is that the one with the nice Pacific Sail being held by the 2 guys? I think that's the one.
No doubt at all about that question. Killing a fish to simply hang on the wall is flat out WRONG. Nowadays the replica mounts can be simply stunning. I use the word CAN because there are a LOT of terrible reproductionists/taxidermists out there. Having gone to college for fisheries/bio I know exactly what the fish should look like (shape, proportions, colors) and wow do I see a LOT of horrible stuff hanging on walls. That being said if you use the right artists you'll swear that your replica is going to jump off the wall at any moment, swim into the other room and eat the cat! All you need to do is get SEVERAL GOOD PHOTOS AND ACCURATE measurements. There are literally thousands and thousands of moulds out there for the reproduction to be cast from. We have had 3 repro's done at the office and we could not be happier. Several that have seen the repro's have then gone out and used the same guys to have theirs done and were also blown away by the craftsmenship. In fact, just yesterday I ran info a customer and friend I have not seen in about a year. The first thing he did was shake my hand and say THANK YOU for referring him to the guys that did our fish. He caught a fantastic Wahoo and wanted a replica for the wall. It now hangs proudly in his home so they can relive the moment everytime they see it http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif.
The other thing to consider is that traditional skin mounts do not age well at all. After a period of time the oils from the skin and such start seeping out and the mount stains and cracks. Today's repro's when done by the right people will last forever and are impervious to weather and UV light.
Having seen literally thousands of mounts and repro's all over the globe on my travels I can tell you without a doubt that the guys at Advanced Wildlife Design in Toronto, Canada (http://www.advancedtaxidermy.com/) are the best on the planet. They have won every award you can win and their paintwork is as good as Mother Nature herself! Their prices are down right cheap considering the work they do.
So please, do not kill a fish to hang it on the wall as it really is a poor decision with what's available to us today.

If it has fins and swims than I must chase it!
Dr. Fish,
I had some fish mounted way, way back when, actually some bluegill from the BWCA my son and wife caught. He was about 4 at the time. Our last day and never thought we'd ever see the place again. That was 18 years ago. I would probably never mount anything again, or have a composite made. However, that said, how do the prices compare? I'm simply curious. Say a 40 in. pike, for example. Skin mount versus composite. Frankly, the species is irrevelant. Just pulled pike out of the sky (which for this time of year is about the only way to get them around here fly fishing). JGW

I think i know what you mean, backbeach--but i'd still catch and release
I don't think anyone got Backbeach's joke.
There's a very attractive girl holding a large brown trout on the cover of the FFA gear guide. I think his question had more to do with the girl than the fish.
Don't get me wrong, I had a couple skin mounts done a long time ago as well. At that time there simply were no good repro people out there.
As far as pricing goes, you'll pay about the same for quality work in each. There are for sure bargain skin mount taxidermists out there but you get exactly what you pay for.

Do you even think that's a real fish/angler/situation on that cover? I don't.
It's either:
1. A repo fish
2. That girl is a model and her photographer boyfriend caught the the fish
3. It's some private stocked pellet fed monstrosity
4. Photoshop baby
I'm not saying that women can't catch fish or anything of the sort. I'm saying that particular woman looks like she stepped off the set from shooting an orvis catalog. She looks like she never caught a fish in her life and the whole picture looks so forced. Maybe that's why it ended up on the cover of the least respected piece of crap magazine/brochure that the industry has to offer?
I would catch and release. That one looks like high matinence.
it's a denver bryant photo...we went to his web site to check it out and there are about 20 pics of that girl holding that fish in all different poses. there is no way the fish survived.
but, backbeach, i got and appreciated the joke!
