Gas Prices
On the news today: There is an upsurge in people trading in 'gas guzzlers' for cars getting more mileage due to gas prices. One guy reported that he can not afford the gas for his 8 cyl.suv.
So I ask: Has the increase effected the fishing trips (say 50 miles one way) that you used to take or the frequency of those trips? Do you go to waters nearer to home that you used to pass up?

Allan,
If you do the math, a 50 mile trip (100 miles both ways) in an 18mpg SUV vs. a 30 mpg gas saver amounts to a savings of about $7 at $2.60 a gallon. I'm not saying that money grows on trees or anything . . . but an extra $7 to keep my sanity and get a break from the office is a cheap investment. The short answer - I'm not taking ANY fewer trips this year due to gas prices.

Its not going to effect my fishing trips much but the girlfreind now drives my Dodge 8 cyl truck on weekdays and I drive her 93 Sentra I bought for her 6 months back. She works only 5-7 minutes from home and I work 45 minutes or so from home. The cost savings for the 2 of us is about $80-$100 per month by switching who drives which rig.
Lucky for me and her right now the Salmon are running in Puget Sound less the 15 minutes from my house close to shore and the kayaks do not use the gas the boat does.
Not looking forward to the boat gas bills in about a months time when we have to travle by boat to get to the better fishing spots on the other side of the big pond called the Puget Sound, but its just an expense that we have to buget for. Lets see a 40 gal tank in that boat will last about two weekends. Add to that repairs and food and its still a pretty cheap way to spend a relaxing weekend.
By the way I just paid $2.63 per gallon two days ago for regular. There are already signs up in some stations for the high grade stuff for over $3.00 per gallon.

Tye, RW here,
It hasn't affected my fishing trips yet, but it might affect some other things I do to make room for said trips. And, it might affect the next car I buy for my wife next spring.
I suspect Honda Civics and cars of their ilk will be making a huge comeback and forcing another retooling of the direction the U.S. auto industry will take like it did last time around. Particularly with folks' second cars and their commute to work vehicles...particularly that last one.
Personally, I think they're all in cahoots.

No effect as retirement put a dent in the usual weekly mileage. Actually driving less now.
Heard report last night that when the gas prices go up folks foresake the high and medium price spreads and just use the low octane gas in their vehicles no matter what it's supposed to call for.

Hey hikepat where along Puget Sound do you live? I lived in Sequim for about 6 years.(Sorry off subject)

Not for me. I still see my parents every few months in Wisconsin and fish there while the season is open. I only get out a few times a month here in Arkansas, but right now, that's due to the 100+ degree heat index and humidity. I have managed to go "smokes-free" since the 1st of May so that helps out the finances there. I figure I save about $150-$175 a month that way so that's a little extra gas money. All I need now is cooler weather.

The short answer is no. BUT the long term affects of a 70.00 drum of oil is Huge!! 40-50% increase in heating a home this winter 30-40%increase in costs to for a farmer to harvest and get food to the market not to mention a big windfall for most unfriendly middle east countries. in the long term it will affect my trips in # and distance. Yours Too!

At $7 a pack I'd be smoke free a heck of allot longer than the 1st of May. I thought it was bad when Marlboro's hit $3.15 a pack where/when I was working.
