I use HAN almost exclusively and I think that the durability, etc. is just fine. And when you consider the difference in price, I think it is just as good. In addition, one can have different colors which broadens the spectrum (pardon the pun) of what you can tie.

Can you use the needle applicator with hard as nails or is it better to use the brush?
I haven't used head cement in years. I just whip finish and fish.
Most of the time I don't use cement, but sometimes it comes in handy when cementing lead in or when i tie my nymph's because the have more of a tendency to come apart while fishing.
I thought Hard as Nails was head cement.
Hard as Nails, tho I thin it down w/ a bit of acetone to get better penetration.

lou t-- I'm sure your kidding if not hard as nails is nail polish. Bluegill it is usually used to add gloss to a head not used for head cement---If you want a small applicator for it cut off half the bristles. I just whip finnish 4 times and fish.
