Olive No Hackle Size; dependant on weather conditions
Back Up in case weather demands. Hare and copper Nymph.
Or I could just use a Jax Roughy and confuse the trout"G" Jax
Jax,
A No Hackle may not be the best choice if you have to fish with that single fly (not single pattern) all day ;-)
My choice: CDC&Elk. Fish dry, damp or wet - and tough as old boots ;-)

Hi mgj,
I would select a royal or lime Trude #14. Take care & ...

I would have to go with a very well tied EHC in size 16. You have the choice of fishing it wet or dry and its a fish getter both ways. 8T

You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it's a real short camping season.
I'll second the bh black wooly bugger idea. Never fails me for trout or bass.
I like the Renegade? what does it cost now days to enter that thing?

Is the one-fly limited to drys or any fly? Never have really read anything about it, so just want to know. Black foam beetle for the dry, bugger for the wet.

I think I'd be tempted to use Scott Sanchez's Convertible.

the fly I would use is my jig (Gray and white in color) and a float set about 5 feet deep...
Reason... if there are minnows in the water there... the fish will hit it!!!
who are some people close to the Jackson hole... Id will gladly send them some to try.. to see if it works..

While I do not like contests I would say look to what has won it before and use that or something close. Ron
Not a hard decision: an unweighted No.12 Zug Bug.

I fly fish the salt because the voices in my head tell me to...
Black zebra midge, gold bead head, gold wire ribbing, antron emerging behind bead, size 20.
Although I have never ben to Jackson Hole, if I were to go there I would probably try a carey first... don't ask me what size though http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif
Just a few thoughts on this one.
Remember this is a 'one' fly contest. You have to fish with the same 'fly' all day, you can't replace it with a duplicate of the same patern.
I'd think that a subsurface fly would be a bit iffy. If you snagged it and lost it, you would be done. It has been won by a sinking fly, though, so maybe the snags aren't that bad.
A high floating fly that is easy to see and retrieve if you get it hung in a tree or brush would be handy.
It would also need to be a very durable fly, one without things that are easily cut or damaged by a trouts teeth.
Seems the last article I read on this showed that the contestants relied pretty heavily on foam bodied terrestials, bushy dries, and snag resistant subsurface flies (some used light wire hooks that would bend so they could retrieve snagged flies).
Sounds like a fun way to spend a day.
Good Luck!

$5000 per team and $10,000 for a corporate team. With only one "professional" per team. 40 teams total.
Here is the link to the winning flies for the last four years. Links to years past are also located in the left column.

Just wanted to add...I have a friend that fished it for ten years. 1991-2000. It's a numbers game your better off catching ten small fish than 2 big ones....so make sure your fly is durable. You have to fish that one fly all day but on day #2 you can change to a differnt fly....Say Day#1-Hopper all day...Day#2- Madem X all day...So your not stuck with the same fly for the whole event (2days)...Just for that one day.
All the money generated goes to stream restoration projects.

my choice of fly would be a caddis green stimi in #14.
at those prices, no wonder the contestants can only afford one fly!
John,
Thanks for the urls.

Interesting progression(?) can be seen in the winning flies working up from 1986 to today...
