Bent Back Flash Tail
david,
In Lefty Kreh's "Fly Fishing for Bass" book, he mentions a two-pronged wire guard he claims is the best he's ever used. I haven't tied any yet, but I've been planning on it.
Basically, you take a section of #5 or #6 stainless steel trolling wire, bend it in half to form a "V" shape and tie it to your hook with the points of the "V" pointing away from the hook. Then you tie your fly as you normally would and just bend back the points of the "V" to cover the hook.
David,
I'm wondering...what it is that's wrong with your set-up? It's fairly established to use for e.g. a 20# mono for a weedguard and not to lose fish because of this.
Guessing here. Do you use too stiff a mono? Do you maybe wrap it too far down the hook bend to prevent good penetration?
Sumpthin's a'miss....because I use mono weedguards for most fish including bass, pike and muskie with no problems to speak of.
Jeremy.
Jeremy, I think your probably right about the mono being wrapped down to far on the hook. I've never had the time to take up fly tying. Worked at a sporting goods store in Roseburg Or. for 22 years and somehow there was always plenty of Umpqua flys around for trades.
