Parachute Hackle...
What kind of hackle do you prefer for parachutes? I like saddles for the most part becuase you can get a lot of flies out of one feather...Any guys like capes for parachutes? If so how do you tie it in? Tip or butt?

Mike, I've used both, but like yourself I prefer Saddles.
When using cape hackle it is only because I want a colour that I don't presently have in a saddle hackle. I select the narrow longest feather that fit the size I need best.
I tie them in by the But, the same way I tie in the saddle hackle.

This one was tied using hackle from a grizzly cape. -Yaf

The saddles sure make wrapping easy, not only because of the length but because of the longer "sweet spot" and the thinner stem. But actually I prefer cape feathers. I like the fact that they are shorter and don't get in my way as I work on the fly. I like Charlie Collins hackle. Yes, I usually get only one fly per hackle but at his prices (about $30 for neck and saddle together) I don't much care. If I were a commercial tier I might think differently. Even if I fished another 40 years I doubt I could use all the feathers I have now nor the ones I am likely to buy in the future. Remember,... collected materials is a hobby, too... but I digress.
