I'm starting to look for a vise to replace my supa-cheap that broke recently. Orvis is offering this rotary for $79. Anyone know anything about it?

bartleby,
Looks suspiciously like a Danvise to me. Haven't owned one myself, but there's lots of folks on this site that have them and love them (the Danvise, that is). To check the similarities go to the sponsor page and look at BT's Site.

bartleby,
A Dan-vise by any other name is still a Dan-vise.
Not the greatest looker on the planet, but a very solid and reliable vise, with a proven track record.
Cheers,

Have one with a pedestal base. Like it very much.
Have a Danvise with a pedestal and have had no problems. Bought an accesory set of heavy jaws on eBay for $20 and use them for saltwater patterns. Like someone said, not a looker but a good true rotary vise. You can buy one on eBay for between $60-65 instead of $79 at Orvi$.

thanks for all the replies. I will go through Al's site instead of Orvis.
I've been seeing this in the Orvis catalog and, since the price seemed reasonable, feared it might be junk (I've noticed orvis has started carrying a few items of dubious quality in order to compete in lower price categories).
Orvis strategically omits any information about who manufactures the vise, titling it simply "True Rotary Vise" or something like that.
Al also sends VHS Tape, that shows you how to setup the Danvise, and use it. This is a bonus, just like Al & Gretchen, to knock the best service up a notch or two.

It is nice doing business with people, instead of a corporation.
Hey, stop knockin the looks of my Dan Vice will ya http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif.
Just take a good look at that picture isn't that one sweet lookin vice?!!
Not only sweet lookin, but oh yeah, works great, true rotary, holds all size hooks really well, the best tying tool I have for the money.
I'm another Dan-vise owner. I'm not a great tyer, but you get a lot of features for $80. I have it on a pedestal.

bartleby,
We ties only for pleasure on another rotary vise.
A friend ties on the Dan-vise. We are always positively impressed as we see it in use.
We would be greatly surprised if you were not satisfied with one.
