Taking the Camera on the Water?
I recently purchased a new camera (Canon Digital Rebel XTi EOS 400D!). One of the main reasons I purchased this specific camera was because I spend a lot of time in beautiful places and I've been able to see many wonders of nature while I'm out on stream or lake. I have really wanted to take my camera with me while wading in river or kickin around in the tube, but I never have because I'm so worried about dropping it in the water, or taking a drink or who knows what else.
Here are my questions. Do any of you take cameras like this on the water with you? I assume so, based on some of the pictures I've seen (the point and shoots don't take quality pics like I've seen). If so, do you carry them in a water proof bag, zip lock or what? Are there any bags out there, like a small duffle or something I can just toss over my shoulder that is water proof? 8)
Thanks! Guys.
Oh yea, in light of the recent "hobbies" thread a lot of us mentioned photography. What kind of cameras do you guys shoot with? Any favorite pictures you want to share. (I'll try to post some later as I am at work right now...)
Re: Taking the Camera on the Water?
They sell waterproof cases that will completely enclose your camera and still allow you to operate it. Check your manufacturer's website. The drawback on these is price. Someday I'll spend the money, but first I have to convince myself that nifty underwater pictures of fish in a stream are worth $200+. I currently throw mine in a 1/2 gallon ziplock storage bag.
In the interest of sharing, I took this last fall. Almost time for steelhead....

Re: Taking the Camera on the Water?
Actually, a lot of the pics you see here are taken with point and shoot type cameras. Yes, they are that good these days. The Pentax WP series is a very good camera and it's water proof.
My advice is not to take your Rebel digital S.L.R. onto the water until you have a waterproof box for it. You have too much invested in a great camera like that to risk dunking it. I will not take my Pentax K110 onto the water until I can get a waterproof box for it. Better to use a waterproof disposable until then.
Re: Taking the Camera on the Water?
I bought a fishing camera this year. It's a Pentax W20 and is a waterprof 7MP digital point and shoot camera. Outdoors it take some very nice pictures. It's a bit challenged in low light and indoors compared to Digital SLRs. I have a Canon 10D and would not like to drop it in the water.

i have a pentax optio w30 when i'm going near water.
Re: Taking the Camera on the Water?
My camera of choice when fishing is a Canon S70 which is an exceptional digicam (point and shoot). I don't bother with a waterproof camera case although I probably should. Some of the best features of this camera is being able to use Raw format and manual settings. I don't like preselected exposure modes as you have no idea what the camera is doing. When not fishing I use a Nikon D2Xs, D200 or D70. When I am shooting with film I use a Pentax 645 which I hope will be replaced with a digital version someday (soon).

I have a Panasonic DMC-FX01 that I bought from my son when he tired of it. Today I picked up a mini dry bag for it for $2.99 from Gander Mountain (5"w x 7" long). Nice long lanyard to put around your neck and store the camera in your shirt pocket or waders.

Here are some pics from the MI Fish-In from this camera.

Couldn't you have gotten better pics of the bikini hatch? lol.
Re: Taking the Camera on the Water?
Your's sounds ike a much nicer camera than a point and shoot, but...

I have dropped my old digital p&s in the river a couple of times. It's dried and worked like a champ. That said, I wouldn't take a nice new camera out unless I had a serious replacement policy.
Again, in the interest of sharing... this right before my camera took it's last dunking!

Re: Taking the Camera on the Water?
I bought a bag called AQUAPAC at the Little Store in Roscoe. 20 bucks it's designed so that you shoot right through the bag. The Co. makes these bags in different sizes for cameras large or small, cel phones, wallets and other uses. The one for cel-phones also works through the bag.
Guys you especially need one not only for your camera but for your car key.
If you have a newer car that key is not supposed to get wet the alarm and sensors in the key will short out. One dunking and you may be stranded plus replacement keys start at 100.00.
