Hello Folks,
Well it's getting to be that time of year again. For those of us in the South, the warm-water fishing season has been improving steadily after the heat of summer. For those in the North, the fishing is slowing down as the water temperature drops and freezing nights begin to occur. What's happening in your neck of the woods----shutting down, slowing down, staying good or red hot? What are you catching? 8T :)
Well in my neck of the woods, here in N.W., IA, the bullgills and small bass have been hitting pretty good. The last few days the fishing has been very good, especially in the late afternoon, early evening hours. They've been hitting surface flies like crazy, mainly hoppers.
Just got back today from a local pond and caught about 20 gills in about 2hrs. A few of them where hitting the fly just a second or two after the fly hit the water ... and hit'em hard! I like to use my 3wt for these guys, alot more fun using a light rod ;)
We had some really cold nights lately, but in the high 50's low 60's during the day with S.SE winds around 10-20mph. Not sure how long this will keep up, but hoping to get a few more weeks in before the cold really starts setting in.

Things are slowing down here, at least for me...only saw one pod of Carp today where there are normally hundreds...hooked one but he took my 3x tippett!
Caught 2 Smallies in very shallow, cold, crystal clear water.
Small local pond full of nice Panfish and Bass laid dead yesterday AM...2 LM's caught in about 2.5 hours...no panfish even seen!
Bluegills and largemouth are still doing well, Smallies are in the shallow water in the reservoirs chasing shad. The whites and wipers should be joining them any day now if we can just get a few windy days to congregate them. Also been catching plenty of drum in the outlets. That's the word here in NE Kansas.
Went out 2 evenings ago for a little over an hour... caught 3 or 4 crappie and a bluegill on a black Mohair leech with a bright orange bead head and a pink Crappie Candy. The water was extremely dirty. I have had more luck in the past couple weeks using smaller patterns... female Adams and some CDC dry flies have been pretty productive, as well as my 3 or 4 go-to flies.
Well, here in Northern Kentucky, action is starting to slow just a bit. It went below freezing here last night. Bluegill and bass are still moving about but a few more nights like last night and a few more days with highs in the 50's and it'll all be over. Usually by about the first of November, the warmwater fishing around here is about done. Still trout in the tailwaters and for those who like to chase steelhead farther north around the great lakes tribs then there's still action.
But my favorite fishing is for bluegill, crappie, and bass. They're about over and we may have a couple weeks left.

The huge yellow perch are a lot more catchable, the one pounders are out and about.
They put a real neat bend in the 2 weight rod !
My fishing partner caught one that touche the two pound mark .
The bite is also on for trout.

There's a chill in the air here in Texas. Cool weather has been off and on for a few weeks. I'm going to start fishing the ponds, hopefully this week, as they will be the first to cool down. Depending on the weather, the lakes should start cooling off soon if not already.
Trout fishing will be picking up in Texas and Oklahoma. A big plus is that the crowds at the trout streams will begin to thin out at the same time. Vacation season begins to shut down as the trout fishing begins to turn on.

All inland fishing is over for this year here in Newfoundland Canada since Oct 7th. Its fly tying untill Feb 1st with exception to the odd go in the salt for searun browns and looking at the big boys heading up river.

The temperature in Austin, TX has been in the 80s, maybe the 70s. It's supposed to get down to 50 degrees later this week. The weather has been great for fishing. I caught a bunch of Rio Grande perch, Guadalupe bass, sunfish, and largemouths last weekend. It will time to fish for 20"+ trout on the Guadlupe River in another month.
The middle of summer is the only bad time for fishing around here. Even then, the fishing on the gulf coast is good. It's just a 4.5 hour drive.
It's getting great hear with the big browns but i am layed up from shoulder surgery...uhh!
Let me report back to you after Sunday. I've not been around for any weekends for several weeks, and most of my nights are tied up with my newspaper and the political season. Come Sunday! JGW
As of about 10 days ago the fishing was still holding up for me though the productive spots have become far fewer and the hours the fishing was good much shorter. Our local municipal lake still had a pretty good bite around sunset for bluegills. On calm evenings I had to scout the shore for areas where the fish were rising and then a small bead head wooly bugger or epoxy minnow brought sucess. There was also one area where some cattails were still green that also was good. As soon as I get a chance I'll have to check that spot again.
The last time I was out in my kayak at Snyder's Bend I ran into some spots the fishing was fast & furious for smallish bluegills and perch. Again the fly I used was a small bead head wooly bugger.
I plan on trying to stay with the fish until these lakes freeze over. That didn't happen last year but I have hopes for this year.

I thought the same thing Ed, Tracy I was in Iowa trout fishing on Tuesday since the Wisconsin trout season is closed. On the way over in the morning it was 26 F and the ice in the guides didn't stop forming until about 10 am. Now tell me again about the chill in the TX air :p I know that it is all relative but your statement did make me smile.
As far as the local fishing, I am still lamenting the close of our Wis trout season and hence the trip to Iowa. I will be chasing some warm water fish still like gills and carp on the fly rod and look forward to some good action with a spattering of salmon and steelhead thrown in the mix.

Here in Upstate SC, the brim are beginning to disappear from the shallower water. Bass, surprizingly enough, are still active. Hybrids are improving though I haven't caught one this fall. :)
I did not get any fishing done this last week.
Friday was involved in making 42 gallons of apple cider (not hard).
Monday was a trip to the bicycle shop to get my bike put back together.

Clay, down here we call 26 F way the heck below "chill" and flat out cold. That's cold enough for us Tennesseans to go looking for a coat (and not just a windbreaker). Scary stuff, that freezing weather. Brrrr.....

Around here, we get 10 months of summer, about 3 weeks each of fall and spring, and 2 weeks of winter. Once every couple or 10 years, it'll get down into the teens, or snow (more than a flurry, anyway). People down here lose their minds when either of those 2 happen.

You translated correctly, Ed. It's been getting all the way down to the 70's. It got down to the 40's this morning. Brrrr! We had to put on extra layers of clothing. I'm with crazy4oldcars when it comes to cold weather.Quote:

Here in the panhandle some of the folks I know talk about the "really cold winter" that the lake froze back in maybe '82. (What they told me that they mean by the lake freezing was that a 1/4 inch skiff of ice formed on the lake about 200 yards out into the lake.)
Up in NW Kansas all of the lakes freeze, and folks ice fish on them. Even so, I know it is a LOT colder for you folks up north. What makes the cold seem worse is the wind we get in western Kansas and west Texas. In NW Kansas a temperature of zero and a 40 mile per hour wind seems like it will really cut through you.
