The spider patterns that I'm familiar with go back back fifty years and more. They use a very short shanked hook whose shank doesn't extend much past the hook point, and they have a turned up eye. Usually they were a size 14 or so. I'm not sure that hook is available today but I still have a few...Mustad made them. Anyway, they were a dry fly. You tied them sparsely with over-sized hackle, usually badger or cochybondou (I think I spelled that right) hackles. There was no body or tail; just the hackle, and the fly floated vertically with the hook down. I still have a few in one of my fly boxes but must admit that I haven't tried to use them for years.

To me they look like soft hackle flies...I don't get the spider stuff....now those other ones ...I backed away lest I be bitten!!!!

Love your photos and tying as usual but I have a bone to pick with you. The Snipe and Purple is my fovorite cold weather fly and I fish it more than anyone I know. (Makes an expert out of me sometimes). Of course I'm always interested in new ties of it and yours is quite unusual (its the seal fur thing). I think that it deserves a name of its own! The "Weilenman Purple" or somehing like that. My personal preference for the fly is the use of fine wire short shank hooks in sizes down to 20. Still a little big for our midges but close to the tiny olives we get on warm winter days! And they're easier and faster to tye.

When the North Country Spiders (a.k.a. Yorkshire Spiders) crossed the Big Pond you 'merkins' just could not leave well alone, now could ya? ;-)
You just had to make things awkward and give them a new name (Softhackles) and confuse and confound the rest of the angling world by fishing them on a classic wet fly swing, not the, often deadly, (quarter) upstream cast, followed by a dead drift as they were designed to do.

Wouldyoumind telling me what you use for the legs.Do you overlap the two sizes or are they end-to-end and what glue you use?

Tyeflies, the pattern is originated by David Martin who specializes in reailistic flies that are fishable. He has a feature article in the latest issue of FlyTier Mag with step by step instructions.
The legs are made of mono leader material (maxima) using 25 lbs and 8 lbs test. The different daimeters are glued end to end using Dave's Flexcement. The crimped legs are bent using a needle heated in a flame.
The cement does an amazing job, I am really impressed at how tough they are.

I am about to finish reading "Two Centuries of Soft Hackled Flies" by Sylvester Nemes.
He explains that spiders is an old English term for soft hackled flies. Some of the most famous are the Black or Red Spider and the Partridge series, Green, Orange and Yellow.
These spiders are very effective because the soft hackle moves back and forth in the water creating movement and a life-like appearance.
I have not tied any of these flies but after reading the book, I certainly plan some tying this winter.

Bass- as in the Fly Tyer mag per David Martin's instructions, I used deer hair over wrapped with thread. No Pantone markers at my house, hence the metallic marker and nail polish finishes.
That very cool french manicure kit from Target has dual ended polish containers; one is a brush, the other is a very fine squeeze point that is also good for painting eyes on minnows.
I got it for the black and white tubes, but the pinks and reds have their place.
A robin skin? Geez, robins are considered songbirds here, I'd have to be independently wealthy to even consider tying with a robin skin......
Robins are regarded as song birds over here in the UK as well, although ours is smaller and a different bird. The constabulary would 'run you in' if you tried hunting them. I can't say I have ever heard of robin being used for flies, the blackbird was very popular but is also now untouchable.

I must admit that I am very fortunate in that I have a friend who Works for a wildlife trust. It is his responsibility to "dispose of" all sorts of dead animals. In return for the odd donation to his employer I can leagally get hold of all sorts of protected animals and it is legal....I just can't sell them!
