West Yellowstone late September

I've been down here in Texas too long, and figured I needed a bit of advice on packing for my next fishing trip. When fishing the West Yellowstone area in late September, would I need to pack waders, or would wet wading be comfortable? Are felt soled boots allowed any more or do I need to purchase some new ones? I don't think I'd be introducing anything foriegn by using them, it's been over a year since they've been wet.

Any flies that I need beyond the typical? I'm sure I'll stop in a local shop for advice and buy a few flies in exchange, but if theres something I should stock up on I'd appreciate knowing. I'm thinking hoppers may be in order.

It's going to be a short trip, with only one full day on the water, so I'll likely just bring a 9' 4wt, 7'6" 5wt, and possibly a new bamboo rod I made, but it casts best with a 2wt line, so I'm not sure if it would be up for the task.

You can still use felt soles, no problem. I would definitely bring my waders; you could luck out and hit Indian Summer there in late Sep but it could be snowing, too. I'm going to be a little south of you in Idaho then - I'm tying up bwo's #18-24, you should see some of them in the Park, too. Firehole has caddis, too. Check Park's Flyshop hatch charts, good info:

You'll want to bring your waders. Snow does start falling at times in the park by Mid-September. Have fun! While in W. Yellowstone, be sure to drop into Blue Ribbon Flies as well. Bob Jacklin is a great guy and they have nice reports.

I'll definately put the waders in. I was trying to get down to a carry on. (They will still let you put a tube for a 4 piece 9' rod overhead, right?) I may still be able to fit the waders, boots, and clothes in the carry on yet, but figuring how to pack all the rod tubes and not exceed my "one carry on and a personal item" limit may be tricky.

You really ought to have a 9' 6-7wt rod as well. Streamer fishing can be good on the Yellowstone, and the fall browns will be moving everywhere but the Lewis.

Some streams are cold all year long and warrant wearing waders. A 6 weight and a 3-4 weight are ideal for most people.

Oooh, you're gonna have fun. Fall is my favorite time in the Greater Yellowstone area. Bring waders, felts are still okay. If you own a 5-weight it should suffice for both streamers and anything else, plus bring a backup. As Scott said BWO's, but the upper Henry's Fork will have some good hatches of Mahogany Duns going so come prepared. Also don't dis the nymphing possibilities as they will probably be your bread and butter. If you get over to the Madison be prepared for some of the best dry-fly action you'll ever see.
