She Ties,
Very informative article. I have one question. How long do you hold the mono near the flame to prepare it for the flattening?
Thank you.

Not very long, depending on how close you are to the flame <1-3 seconds. When the mono starts to melt you will notice that a ball will form. Once that happens flatten it out to hold the beads.
thats a fantastic idea, i just bought a crapload of small beads, different colours, and they turned out to be too small for anything......but this, thank you
That's cool SheTies. Now how about posting a photo of one of your Dragon Nymph's on which you have used these beads? Please?

Excellent tip sheties. I have passed it on to a couple of friends that tie realistics and they see potential to making some steps in realistics easier. Thanks on behalf of my friends and myself.

I'm happy to share, I thought that they were a good idea too.
Rich, I may just be able to do that sometime this month. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif I'm going on a mini holiday and have lots of tying to do before then. I am sure that some damsels are on the list. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/biggrin.gif
I've been doing the mono/glass bead thing for quite a while now on shrimp and crab patterns.
I've found that occasionally the bead will slip back from the melted end so you might want to put a small drop of Zap-A-Gap or Krazy Glue Gel on the opposite side of the bead from the melted end.
Just my 2?
Do you think the heat source makes any difference?
In the past I have used a gas lighter and found too often the mono would catch fire and blacken...probably because I was trying to get too big a ball. Flattening like you do seems to be a good idea to avoid that. Thanks.
