I've been hearing about this for sometime. Surely only a matter of time until someone offers "hunts". I saw one pic where they had about 7-8 laid out in front of an air boat. There was mention of a "bounty".
Guess we really don't need pythons and anacondas. Wonder if they'll hit a fly? ;)
Found and disposed of near the St. Augustine outlet, in a new KB homes subdivision. Originally reported to be 15 ft. but I understand it was only a little over 7 ft. long
I think the guy in the middle photo is back about 20 ft. so it a matter of perspective. There is no doubt that Eastern Diamondback was almost fully grown. I grew up in the south and have only seen a couple in that size range. The first AT I made with the Army Natl. Guard someone killed a rattler around that size in the bivouac area. The next day someone caught a coral snake in their tent. But there is plenty to eat year around, squirrels, rabbits, birds and the venomous snake pack a full load of venom. Snake leggings are not hard to find for hunters, etc
The Sedgwick County Zoo has an 18' reticulated python. They feed it about once a month and measure it once a year. The latter is usually a media event because it takes about 20 guys to get the thing straightened out. BTW this is an excellent zoo and well worth a visit If you are in the area. No I don't work there, it is truely exceptional.
Don't know if a python will hit a fly but have caught several water moccasins on poppers and hoppers before, darnedest trouble getting the hook out though, and I get it out one way or the other (usually the other).

One of my best friends moved to "The Villages" a large retirement community north of Orlando. I ask him if he ever heard about python and boa being found in his area. He replied all the time. They are moving north.
Back to the rattlesnakes, when I received the photo of the rattlesnake it was reported the world's largest rattlesnake, it may be, but further inquiry indicated it a little over 7 ft. not 15 ft. as originally stated in the email. Big bad snake either way. Rattlesnakes over 6 ft. are not uncommon in the southeast. It doesn't take a lot to keep a snake happy, a little water, an occasional small animal and a hidey hole. Snakes, including the venomous variety, do more good than harm in the country side. There are a bunch of crazy folks over in the southern version of LA (Lower Alabama) that have a rattlesnake roundup each year. Have fun like seeing how man snake you can put in your sleeping bag and still zip it up and crawl out.
My dad was a big man 6 ft. 3 in. 250 lbs. or better. A good many years ago my dad was traveling down a southern interstate highway when the urge hit him in a wooded area, a long way between anything. He pulled over got his roll of TP and head out in the woods. He said he had just got his pant down and squatted when he heard the buzz of a rattlesnake. He told me he completely forgot the urge.
