Excellent rendition of Gary's tried and true fly.
I fish this one all the time from Harriman's ranch up into
the Hebgen lake region.
A real fish getter.
Bravo !
If I may add one thing in Gary's honor. Byron he would be proud of your creation..
"LaFontaine's" Sparkle Pupa
This fly is my all time favorite, The bubble body is formed with antron fibers that expels water bubbles
that mimic the actual sedge as it emerges from the stream bottom through the water column.
The original developer of the fly did under water study of the live caddisfly pupa in the cold waters of the snake river in Idaho.
burrr... but boy am I glad he did. "Gary LaFontaine" Deer Lodge , Montana, rip my friend,
Hi Steve. Not Scott though.
Had the pleasure of meeting Gary LaFontaine several times. Great observer of aquatic insects with the ability to translate that into patterns.
I knew that Byron :)
Take that as a compliment as well..
Thanks Steve
Are you aware that Gary’s work for “Caddisflies” was the result of his Master’s thesis? I believe in Psychology”?
He convinced his advisor to let him do a study on the trout’s behavior relative to food sources somehow!!!!
Byron,
Gary gave a seminar one time years ago at Bennett Spring. A very interesting guy.
He later did a humorous story about Bennett in his newsletter. He said-There was a guy who fished Bennet Spring State Park in Missouri all his life. Then one time he decided to go to Montana and fish one of the streams. Late one day he was found near death at the side of the stream. The person who found him asked what happened. He said he was still waiting for the siren to sound and passed out from exhaustion.
Yes I was aware of that,Quote:
Thanks Steve

a quick story -
I have several books of his one is Fly Fishing High Mountain Lakes,
he published his phone number in the front, I called him to give compliment
we spoke for well over 15 minutes he invited me up to his place in Deer lodge for
a day fishing ,, the man was genuine and a real gentlemen with sense of humor
and wisdom about a fly rod that goes unmatched, I have one of his namesake rods
dulled down just as he promoted them,
He and his dog Chester will always be remembered fondly by me...
Take care
I had dinner at the Lodge in Bennett with Gary, Charlie and club members that night.
I had no idea he was a guest of the club that weekend.
I was there fishing. Charlie saw me in the dining lodge and invited me to join the group for dinner. Was seated next to Gary. Small world!!!
Life sure does have great moments ....
