One of my top 5 Flies
Of all the flies I have used over the last 40 years or so, the X-Caddis is among the top 5 producers for me.
We all tie this pattern a little differently, but this is is how I tie it.
Poor photo (taken with my phone).
Anyway, a really effective pattern in catching trout.

Totally agree with you, Byron. It just seems to draw trout, hatch or no hatch.

Other 4 fly patterns/styles in varying sizes:
Comparadun
Red Fox Squirrel Nymph
My Soft Hackle pattern (photo coming)
March Brown Spinner

What are your Top 5 patterns/styles?
-
Assuming we are talking about trout at the moment. These would be my top 5.
LTD
EHC Lite (Ginger)
C2C Nymph
Squirrels Nest Nymph
Golden Retriever
If I had to pick 5 patterns to fish anywhere with...These would fill my box. While not my 5 favorite flies on a given water, I know that between the 5 of them, at least ONE will not let me down pretty much anywhere as long as I do my part.

If we are talking trout, these are my 5:
Klinkhammer (tan body with grizzly hackle)
Hare and herl bugger with bead chain eyes
Olive Conehead Combo
Olive Deep Sparkle Pupa
Muddler
-
Woolly Bugger
Parachute Adams
Quigley Emerger
Copper John
San Juan Worm
To be honest, one really does not have to carry anything else.
-
This is tough. With many second thoughts:
woolly bugger
pheasant tail
comparadun
olive caddis larva
gold sucker spawn
-
This thread is making it glaringly obvious that I don't need to carry my 15 fly boxes with their 45 +/- patterns on the stream every time.:D
-
Speaking for myself, I didn't say you only need 5.......Just mentioned my top 5 producers, and one, for example, the Comparadun/Sparkle Dun, can be tied to imitate nearly all duns.
I enjoy hearing what others find to be their most productive.
