treating furled leaders
I finally ventured to the dark side and started furling my own leaders.
unbelievably simple once you figure out a few tricks.
So my question is what do you use to waterproof them?
I did half a dozen up each in #100 silk ,8/0 uni thread,6X Dai Riki and a few that I wove a strand of flourescent floss into the butt loop as a strike indicator.
I can't believe how well they turn over a fly.I will have to use them more before I decide if I like them better than mono .

You can treat them with floatant at the time you tie them, then refresh them periodically onstream. Gink works for me.
-
I never treat mine. I use them for wet flies only.

I use mono for my furling and don't treat them at all.

Red Tin Mucilin, Gerhke's Gink, Thebault's Silk Line dressing, all work. The trick is how much!! Wipe some on your fingers, rub it in as you pull the leader through, then pull it through a piece of cloth. Too much it will sink, too little it won't float long. Just right, they float for hours.
6/0 Uni Thread in a 10/8/6 at 5' is a great length with 24" of 4x and then 12" of lighter tippet.

right now i'm going 11/7/3-1/2 in a 7'leader.I thought I would play around with a few more conbinations and lengths this weekend.I am going to build a 15'jig[as long as my shop work bench] and try some spey leaders.My wife is starting to think i'm obsessed for some reason.Fortunately I worked in a sawmill in a former life and bought enough wood in select grade to keep me in project material for a couple of years.

gonfishn;
Thank's for this post. It was very timely as I just purchased a bamboo rod. In my retirement years I had forgotten what silicone can do to a painting process!!
