I've been tying the simple furled leaders for several years now. I bought the Kathy Scott dvd and it proved very helpful. I do have a question about attaching the small 2.0mm tippet rings to the leader. What is the best way to do this? Do you attach it after the leader has been furled and the shorb loops already made, or do you place it on the thread and then furl the thread (I would think this would be near impossible).

Here is what I did to install the tippet rings: I found a crochet needle that the tip was small enough to go through the ring and then slid the tipett ring onto the crochet needle, hooked the loops of one leg before twisting with the crochet needle, lifted those loops off the peg, slid the tippet ring down the crochet needle and over the loops onto that leg. You can then twist that leg to the 10% plus the other leg. Once both legs are twisted, you can slide the tippet ring down the leg to be at the tippet end of the leader and use the installed tippet ring as the hook up for your weights and allow the leader to furl. Once furled, you only need to put a shorb loop at the butt end and your furled leader with a tippet ring is ready to fish. Hopefully, this is clear enough for you to do it. There are other ways to install a tippet ring, but this is the way I do it. I also install a very small swivel on the tippet end of some of my furled leaders. Jack got me started on that. : )

I slide mine down one leg before I begin the furling, held to the center upright with a safety pin and o/ring on the upright.

I make twisted mono leaders without a jig and put tippet ring on after. Slip the tippet loop through the ring and slide the leader butt through tippet loop . Pull the leader all the through and it forms a loop to loop knot on the tippet ring.
Maybe this will not work for furled leaders
I have not forgot about doing this for those interested, have a fair amount of reel seats and inserts to get turned and into tomorrow's mail. I am also off on mondays so I will make the time to get this to happen.
There just are not enough hours in my days to get things done, I am even 7 rod builds in the hole at this time.

It's just my opinion but I feel this method is less likely to be a hinge point.

Finally got some leaders furled and had a chance to put on some tippet rings. Many thanks go to all of you who offered advice and input. Jack, you pictures and instruction were invaluable. I made three types of thread leaders and also some mono leaders and the rings worked well on them all.
Thanks again to you all; now I can't wait to use them.
I do it the same, however instead of Paper clip I use wire. I then thread the wire through the ring (NOTE: Depending on your ring supplier, not all rings are the same. I bought some #2 on ebay and they were bigger than my J Stockard #3). I then thread the knit picker through the loop in the end of the leader (where the wire is) them I grab the ring and pull it through then tighten. Much easier then pulling the entire leader through.

The paper clip in the photos has absolutely nothing to do with installing the ring. The crochet hook does. I'd like to see some step by step photos of your method as it sounds like it would be faster, pulling the entire leader through is a pain.

I hope this makes sense. This is what works for me. I use wire off an old electric tool so there is plenty of it. I also use a pedestal from a vise for a third hand. Thank you all for the info. I've been studying on how to do this for a while. With Joni's technique I was able to put a ring on a pre-existing perfection loop on a mono leader, just to see if I could. Thanks again.
I make mine the same way Joni does. The connection is twice as strong.
