i was born and raised in the Utica/Rome area, moved to the catskills at about 17, and spent the next 5 years following vacationers--summers in Montauk, winters at Hunter Mt., spring and fall in Manhatten. i was a bouncer/bartender following the crowds.
now i live in northern california...
I'm from lower NY, LI. But I have a bunch of family in the Rochester and Brewster areas.
Wyoming county native, involuntarily (and hopefully not permanently) relocated to the desert SW. I make it home at least three months of every year, primarily to fish and hunt.
Dear MPW,
I spent 11 years living in Broome County, that's upstate isn't it?
Eventhough I am a Pennsylvania native who returned to his roots I really miss my old adopted home.
Regards,
Tim Murphy
Tim,
It's upstate, but to us up here,
it's "Lower Upstate".
We kind of consider any thing
below the Kingston area as "not" upstate.
Not that I have anything against our
"Downstate" freinds.
So you just made the cut!

Elmira,
Left for 37 years but came back after retirment. Its a good place to be from (far away from) but I'm a glutton for punishment and like it here! Many of our kids seem to go elsewhere after college. I wonder if any of them will return after retirement.
Ol' Bill
Born in Batavia, NY, and grew up in Medina, NY. The upper reaches of the Oak Orchard runs behind my parents house and I've fished the entire length of it.
Have relatives all over, but they all call me a New Englander now that I live in Vermont.
I'm from Minoa about 10 miles east of Syracuse. Now, that's upstate!!
I live in the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid area, which is actually 'upstate.' We like to call it Northern New York so we're not lumped in with the 'below Albany' crowd.
