Attitude Improvement
I've been feeling sorry for myself lately because I've been sick and unable to go fishing. To make matters worse, this morning my physician scheduled me for some more obnoxious tests and told me he's 95% sure that I'll be undergoing one or even two major abdominal surgeries this spring. I lost it. And I admit to feeling way more than a little sorry for myself and frustrated and sad.
But I had already scheduled to have 5 students in my women's studies class (creating a website about women in sports and outdoor rec) join me for a fly casting lesson and fly tying session. We spent a bit over an hour casting and I felt myself get happier and happier as the minutes went on. The best part was taking one of their purses and putting it in the middle of the field and having them target practice. They got good!!
Then two of them joined me and learned some tying.. wooly buggers, of course. Talk about happy campers!
They were wonderful to work with and grateful for the intro. I, on the other hand, feel way more than merely grateful to have had the chance to wave the rod around for a while and see these folks do it for their first time.
Next we're going to attack the goldfish in the campus pond and see if we can trick them into biting some green weenies, griffith's gnats, and bivisibles. I can't wait to see my students go for it!
Amazing what a little getting past myself will do for a lousy mood.
Thanks for listening.

Doing what you love can be a great help to overcome adversity. Keep it up and may we exchange a warm hug at the Michigan Fish-In!
P.S. I'm still searching for a place to rent a pop-up for your trip to Michigan. I think you'll get along very well with one. I do.

Diane;
I have not given you premission to be sick. You have not caught that 10Lb bass yet this year so tell the doctor that you will not allow yourself to be sick.
I am praying he is full of bull and that there is nothing wrong that a good day of shooting and fishing will not cure. If there is something more wrong do not put off the treatment, you have a huge family here pulling for you. I know how much they mean to my recovery. Last Pet scan showed no cancer and no pets. Now you get in there and get better.
Hugs
Harold

Diane,
Glad to hear things got better. It's amazing what turns a frown into a smile. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/biggrin.gif
Don't forget, after the tests, to get second opinions. Some docs love to schedule surgeries. Some tried less intense approaches first.
Keep us posted. (Pardon the pun)
Regards,
Diane

Diane,
You are in my thoghts and prayers. A spirit like yours will prevail. If you didn't feel a little sorry for yourself I'd have been very worried about you. It's alright to feel that way at times. Perhaps it made your day with the other ladies even more rich and special than other times. The world needs more good folks like you!

Thanks, you guys. Oh.. I forgot to mention one part of the doc's visit that was actually fun. He asked me what sorts of activities I did when I didn't work. I mention fly fishing. He actually pulled me back into the exam room, shut the door, grinned, and said.. so how are the local streams? Seems that he fly fishes but never has done so locally and is in a competition with the husband of one of his secretaries to find the best local stream. I, of course, gave him my very best advice, and he suggested that we might just have to wet a line together after the surgery. I think next visit I'll bring him some flies I've tied.
Thanks again for the support, folks. It really helps.

Diane,
I sure hope that your doctor is wrong. It does happen. After getting a horrible prognosis from three local doctors, my wife went to Emory and got an excellent report from the leading expert in the field. NO SURGERY! It would be wonderful if you could have the same luck.
Please keep us posted. 8T
