Al's fly auction?
I have been thinking about the fly auction that was held for Al Campbell. Since alot of us sent some flies in I was wondering how things went. Were there any pictures taken, and if the goal was met. I believe that I heard the mention of a bench being placed by one of Al's favorite streams.
Thanks for any info,

FIREMAN,
I remember this coming up this past Fall and the person that was handling this responded that they had many "irons in the fire" at that time and I think they were going to have something going on this this spring. Not sure but I think they were moving, remodeling their home or something and would let us know this Spring when they had the time to go forth 100% with this project. Needless to say, it is going to happen and we need to just be patient and wait for it. I am, like you, anxious to see the flies and how the outcome of the sale went. I plan to try and purchase some of the flies but not the flies I sent.

I sent flies too. I believe it was PDEITER who ramrodded the whole thing. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. And will accept correction gracefully. I trust the bench is still in the works, and just wait patiently to hear. If it happens, and I believe it will, then it WILL happen. If it doesn't, worrying or grousing won't change anything. I imagine some politics may be standing in the way, and PDEITER most likely has his hands full. That being said, Al is still in my heart. Bench or no bench, his legasy lives on.

Here is an email I received from Paul back on August 17, 2005:
OK all I've been very remiss in sending out this final email on the fly submissions. My excuse is that the second story addition permit for my house finally came through after a full year long process of city hoop jumping and I've jumped into it whole heartedly while I had some time to devote to it.
There was admittedly some confusion as to the time frame of my turning the flies around for sale. I gave myself the whole winter to arrange for the sale of the flies but I didn't make that public because I felt it would affect the timeliness of the submissions (i.e. dragging it out forever). I hope to conclude the whole process and maybe install the bench by next summer, but at this point I have no idea what hoops might drag on on the Dakota side of things. So in short don't look for anything to happen too quickly but be assured once I'm ready to go with sales EVERYONE involved will be notified.
We didn't end up with 100 sets of flies but I think 84 will do quite nicely. I suspect that the large number of "drop outs" is due to email issues more than people choosing not to participate. The collection is quite impressive and I have no doubt Al would be quite pleased with all of your efforts; I know I am.
If you don't wish to receive any more of these emails (pertaining to future events please reply and let me know)
Have fun
Paul

Al Campbell passed from a brain tumor on April 28th, 2005. It is all here: [url=http://www.flyanglersonline.com/ldy/ldy050205.html:46e7b]http://www.flyanglersonline.com/ldy/ldy050205.html[/url:46e7b]

Sorry for the late reply. I'm just getting caught up on the boards.
The auction will be running sometime this spring (check with Paul D for more details). Everyone will get plenty of notice when the flies go up on the block, I'm sure.
The Memorial Bench target placement will be the Cleghorn Springs Hatchery on the west side of Rapid City, where there will be lots of exposure.
Al was a great man and a true friend to many, even to some who never even met him face-to-face. To this day, he is still deeply missed by many.
