I've seen the Davy W knot talked about here and was shown it by a friend a week ago. I'm heading to S Andros in a couple of weeks. Is that knot strong enough to be used on bones and other sw critters? TIA.

lol,,, one way to find out. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif
(ps. I use a different one.)
Yeah, I know. But that first one may be THE one. What do you use?
Bob
I would think you would want to fish a loop knot, but then again my only saltwater experience has been with sea trout and Red fish.
One of the strenght's of the Davy Knot is with small trout flies because it is a small knot and does not make the tiny fly appear bigger.
C'mon Grand Poo Pa pleeeeeease tell us what the best knot for Bone Fish is. At least I can dream about it

If I were a betting man, I'd say he uses the "Castwell Knot"
Sure, I use that from the line to the leader, but not to tie on a fly,,, http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif
I use one that's like a bowlin, but an overhand knot instead of just the loop as in the bowlin. It is a loop that stays open, allows fly to swing. For solid ties I use the improved clinch a lot. It can be 'improved' by taking a few extra turns around the standing line before dropping back down into the loop.
Hey, this is all real secret stuff that only us experts use. We don't let just anybody in on this. Some is 'proprietary' too, and you know what that means!

I do not know how the Davy knot will do on salt water.....but I have caught some nice steelhead using it. Easy knot to tie when your hands are very cold and not working like they should.
I read on Davy's website where he's used the knot (successfully) for tarpon.
I've been experimenting with it and like it. I've been using 5X for carp and have landed a bunch with no knot failures. After landing about a dozen carp last week, I hooked the biggest turtle of my life. I played him (or maybe he played me) for 15-20 minutes. I finally had enough and jerked on the line to break him off. The tippet broke, NOT the knot.
I was impressed!
Thanks All.
I have used the non-slip loop knot, improved clinch knot, and the Orvis knot with excellent results for bonefish, steelhead, salmon, large smallies, etc. The elegant simplicity of the Davy knot appeals to me, however. That's why I posed the question.

In the salt I use a nonslip loop Perfection). I get better fly action and great breaking strength.
