Metz Whit Finish tool
Found one of these cheap. Can't figure out how the "Whit Finish" part of the tool would make the final knot faster OR last longer. Basically it uses the same idea and technique as a rod wrap uses. One must cut the thread, then insert in the loop and pull tight. Anyone ever use one? Are they better or just different?
The tool also has a bodkin and a velcro-type dubbing brush.
See it here

Mine has a much shorter loop, and black velcro
Thanks,

Whitlock uses one in his video that I have on Red Fox Squirrel Nymphs. I made a couple up out of dowel sticks. I have mono on each end. (one fine, one med) It works good. I wouldn't say it is faster, or better. It is just a different way of doing it. It is handy if hackle is getting in your way, or if you want to do a whip finish that is back further than the eye point, say BEHIND the hackle, instead of in front of it...with a hackle collar. This tool looks like it would be very useful. If you can get it cheap, it would certainly be worth trying out.

Many of my older fly tying books show this type of tool for whip finishing a fly.
I know it works, but I think that the newer tools that let you do the knot without cutting the thread are certainly faster. Plus, if you do a 'double' it's much easier with the new tools.
The old way still has it's uses, though, but I'd not buy something that can be made for next to nothing from handy scraps, but I'm cheap :).
AND, for those that want to make one, try using gel spun materials for the loop. Very slick and strong.
