the history of rodmaking in the US...

Hello, new member here. Could anyone recommend any books or websites which focus on the history of bamboo rod making (and makers) in the United States?

First of all, welcome to FAOL. It's simply the best flyfishing website around. For more info on the history of bamboo rods, you might want to join the "Chatroom" tonight between 6-8 PM Pacific Daylight Time. It will be hosted by the best of all bamboo rodmakers; Ron Kusse. 1. Best choice (basics) for someone thinking about getting into bamboo:
"Fishing Bamboo" by John Gierach. Inexpensive and informative.

2. For more history with good depth on the Eastern early rodmakers, and continuing through the recent Winston debacle, try "Casting a Spell" by George Black. Published just this year.

3. The magnum opus is "Classic Rods and Rodmakers" by Martin Keane. Great stuff, but you'll have trouble getting a copy at a reasonable price.

There is also an interesting video called Trout Grass. Worth looking at to give some sense of the process from the growing to the fishing and all stops inbetween.

'Splitting Cane' by Ed Engle which covers some of the modern builders. and if you want THE how to...

...'A Masters Guide to Building a Bamboo Fly Rod' by Everett Garrison and Hoagy Carmichael.

A book that covers this subject very well is:

"Trout" volume two, by Ernest Schwiebert

It's a history of rod making from the mid 1800's, and before, through the glass era and the start of the graphite age.

I'll second that "Casting a Spell" by Geo. Black. A fine read to sit back with a cup of coffee on a rainy afternoon and dwell on some good stuff! I just started it.
