I have heard rumblings that the sponsors and contributors are a little closely linked but I suppose this is natural.

Interesting. Eastern stuff. That means that this is a Eastern site or issue, so the West isn't very well represented. That doesn't really matter, since the appeal of the site is the layout and interesting navigation. Like looking through a magazine but with no paper.

I know these guys and am doing a bit of writing and informal consulting for them.
I really like This Is Fly. It's fresh and innovative and tries to reach a younger demographic than its older siblings do. And I think that is VERY important.
With a brand new publication, there is ALWAYS a close relationship between the original batch of sponsors and the original batch of contributors. You find a few folks who believe in the vision and run with that. Over time, the goal is to expand that pool of believers so that you can create a clear distinction between content contributors and ad buyers. These folks seem to know what they're doing. I think we have to give them time and judge their journalistic ethics after a year or two instead of out of the starting gate.
FYI, there's ANOTHER new on-line fly fishing BLOG that everyone should take a look at, too. It's http://OzarksFlyAnglers.blogspot.com The blogger is one of my favorite outdoor writers. 8)
