If it's a double taper---swap ends, put the damaged area to the backing.
A WF? Probably buy a new one.

It's actually quite easy to splice a fly line. I've done it a couple of times and never had a problem with it. Use acetone (AKA fingernail polish remover) to remove the coating from the core for about an inch on each end of the splice, overlap the ends and "whip finish" them with tight, touching wraps of size "A" or similar thread, then coat the splice with Pliobond or similar cement.
