I recently tied some jig-a-buggers on 1/8 oz. jigs. The flies worked extremely well, however, I lost a much higher percentage of fish than usual. Does anyone have any suggestions on either choice of jigs or tying technique to help me keep more fish on. BTW, I smashed down the barbs on the jigs as I do on all my flies.

My favorite fly is the jig... I have use them for almost 7 years now... I do a fair job on them...
But you said you used a size 1/8oz... I use 1/64 down to a 1/180...
I havent used a big one like you are talking about... but on the small one if you take the point of the hook and angle it out just a bit... the hook up is a little better...
I did write 1/8 oz. Try casting that on a 3 wt. I meant 1/80 oz.

BTW..I just thought of this, havent done it.. but..
what if you took the hook and bent it left or right.. where it isnt so even with the hook eye.. what do you think?

Hello- what a great bunch of people on here, you people amass me, a fly forum that you can talk about jigs on .Any way, I fish steelheads a lot with 1/80 oz jigs. I also crimp barb down and bend hook out a little bit, works good for me to.

Okay, now you've gone and done it. You've opened up Pandora's box.
What's the difference between a jig and a bead head fly other than the shape of the hook? IMHO, they are the same. The verbage is just another way for fly fishers to disassociate themselves from spin or bait fishers. Same is true of the word 'indicator' as opposed to 'bobber'. It's simply a way fly fishers have to distinguish themselves from a term used in another form of fishing.

well if you took a 1/180 oz jig and put it on a spinning rod.. you may cast it 3 feet.. and that with 2lb test... on a fly rod you can get it out where you want it...

I also have some on a smaller hook with a 1" very tiny grub body...looks like a sure thing for Blue Gill and a lot easier to cast on a fly rod than an ultra light spin rod...can get much further out than just flipping would allow.

Your point about nomenclature is well taken. A bobber by any name....
Here is my take on jig hooks. There is a difference but its not the weight. Jig hooks are the ones that have the eye bent up at up to 90? from the shank. They may or may not have a lead head. The action of jigging is why the bend. The theory is that the fly/jig/bait suspends in a more natural presentation.
I like to use them "store-bought" for the size and the built-in head that most have. There are some jig heads that are less than 90?, Eagle Claw 413 jig hook has a 60? bend.

I acknowledged the difference in the shape of the hook in my post. On most nymphs with a beadhead, it is along the shank. However, although the bead is claimed to be used to get the fly down and for attraction, the fly does 'jig'.

luck on them here. My favorite is a bit
different though. I find that the smaller
curley tails with a foam head and plastic
eyes makes a killer pattern for large gills,
shellcrackers, and bass. It is a quick and

Use less marabou in the tail, set the hook when you feel the fish, set the hook again after you've had it on a second or two, sharpen your hooks, keep a tight line on the fish. If you're hooking them even for a second then it's not the flies fault the fish are getting off.Quote:

I have noticed that some of the store-bought jigs with lead heads have short shanks. Looks like it could be possible to get short strikes due to the lead head coming so close to the tip (relatively speaking)

up a few of the plastics as I had described.
Here are a few of them. I put a good thread
wrap on the hook and use C/A adhesive to put
them together. Not bullet proof but usually
good for a dozen fish or so.*G* Only about

Are the plastic eyes just shoved into a hole in the foam? Is there a drop of CA glue holding them in or just friction?

I agree, nice flies. I assume you shape the foam for the grubs (in the picture) on the Dremel?
I've primarily used plastics for sinking flies. I think I'll glue up a few in floating config too. I'll bet they look just like a minnow gasping for air.
I feel a little bad that we've hi-jacked Alex's thread. So I'll chime in on his original question.
I used to use the 1/80 - 1/120 jig heads a lot, but I've stopped using them, in part for the reasons you mentioned. It did seem that with smashed barbs, the fish could easily work their way off. I think the short shank plus the offset head gave them a leverage point to work against.
So I started making my own version using longer shanked Aberdeen hooks and "clamshell" weights. I may or may not bend the shank, depending on the application. I just clinch the weight on with a pair of needle nosed pliers, then a drop of CA holds it practically forever. Not as pretty as a molded head, but the fish definitely don't care.

Yes, the heads for the squigly grubs are
a dremel shape. Only takes a few seconds.

Roger said in another thread on the main board that he used split-tail plastics with a bead-head. I did some #8 Mini Tail (brand: Creme) with brass bead-heads (silver and gold). Kind of like a mini plastic tube with silicone strands for the tail (supposed to be used for jigs). After putting on the bead-head, I put a thread base on the hook shank and put some slow setting Duco Cement on the thread wraps before inserting the hook into the tube. Don't know if they will work yet http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif. Sorry I don't have a photo.
Update: Cement didn't work. Had to use superglue.

Another approach to creating a jig-like action is with a beadhead on a scud hook. To keep it riding upward, angle the tail as shown here. This will turn the hook over.
