I've always been torn about fishing during the spawn. Is it acceptable or not?
That question could be almost as volatile as religion or politics. ;)
I think of it as a matter of personal choice. My choice is no, I do not fish on the reds (spawning beds).

Fish the deep water downstream of the spawning areas, not the gravel. The deep water is the bar at 10:30. The gravel is the bedroom at midnight. :)
If you have to ask, I think you know the answer. Problem with following Longs for Cutts' advice is that if you are going to fish those fish not yet on the reds, you better make sure you are not disturbing the spawning beds why you are at it.
It is really easy to avoid spawners. Fishing 6-8 feet of water with a bouldery bottom isn't going to harass active spawners any. Just watch where you walk.
Longs: If it were that easy, I would not see it happen so often. I'm not accusing you, just commenting based on observation.
The reason we "FISHWYO" ( my IL license plate #) in late Sept and early Oct is the Brown Trout spawn run on the Snake River in GTNP. Beautiful fish in full spawn colors. We fish only the runs and never the area even remotely close to the beds. My conscience does bother me a bit when It takes 15 minutes to net a 20" fish on my 4 wt. ( BUT, I get over that REAL FAST).
As an aside, while there in Wyoming, I did send a deer to it's eternal rest with my vehicle at a mere cost of about $ 5000- $ 500 ( deductible). Vehicle is now repaired, the deer died.

Thought the Snake in GTNP was a Cutthroat fishery? Are there a lot of Browns there?

This Brown Trout in it's ccolors was caught in the Snake about 3 miles downstream of Flagg Ranch. Without touching by hand, I remove the barbless hook ,take a quick pic ( depending) , gently grasp tail and revive as necessary.
The fish pictured here is in about 4 inches of water.

PS: So much for trying to post a pic. Y'all will jujst have to "believe".
