Hello to everyone, I'm new to this site and fly fishing. I've recently bought a starter kit from Dick's and was wondering if there were any tips before lining my reel?

Hi and welcome aboard....
You've joined a great site...and the people (and owners) are better.
Tips...here ya go...arbor knot when tying the backing to the spool and Albright knot for tying backing to fly line. Make sure the fly line isn't twisting when you're spooling up your reel. I like to use a second person holding the spool on a pencil or screwdriver or something like that. I'm sure many people more knowledgeable than I will chime in. Again, welcome aboard and enjoy your stay.

P.S. those knots I mentioned can be found on the main page here. Good luck....oh...one more very important thing...have fun!!!
To get the proper "Fill" start by attaching the front end of the flyline to the arbor and spool it up. Then attach the backing and spool it on until about a 1/4" from the rim. Then take all the line off attach the backing with the arbor knot and spool the whole thing back up.
It is best to do this alone. No cats, dogs, childern, etc present to get things tangled!
Welcome Aboard!!
The best advice I can think of is PATIENCE.
Hi Wheel
You've found the best fly fishing site on the interner. Lots of good people and good advice. Don't be a stranger and let us hear from you often.
Best advice I can give is "Remember fly casting is not spin fishing. Timing and not force is the key to success." Best of luck. 8T :)
Good call ,dudley.....

Unless you have some kind of spooler, I would take it to a shop. 90' of fly line (which most are) is not a real big hastle but depending on the reel (Traditional or Large Arbor, Medium/wide arbor) you could be looking at 50 to 250 YARDS! of backing. The other choice would be to read what the reel manufacturer recommends for backing and buy that much and, just spool it first.
As far as tying backing to the reel, I use the method I learned from Orvis. Wrap backing around hub of spool, twice, Then while holding remaining backing and tag, Loop around all four fingers on that hand, twice, loop tag through the line looped around your fingers , twice and pull....done and won't slip.
Then once you get set up, find a class....REALLY! it is the only way if you plan on serious Fly Fishing.
Thanks guys, I'll try and get the line on later today. I'll either come back happy or cussing. Wish me luck.
