low # of flyfishers
I am really getting hooked on flyfishing and i know a good number of people in my area flyfish but its only for salmon which in most cases, is on the miramichi away from our lacal waters. i just cant understand why nobody fishes all of the many other species of fish in my local area with fly. i can honestly say i have never seen anybody on the water with a fly that i fish frequently. Now it seems to me after spending some time on this site that it has to be wicked popular in other parts. anyway, ,some guys look at me funny when i tell them i will be going after bass or pan fish with a fly rod. anybody else seem to be in the same boat i am in? It really bites when it comes to asking around for advice or tips on flyfishing in my area for species other than trout or salmon. Thank god for flyanglersonline.com.

Dear new2fly,
I like to fish for smallmouths and panfish almost as much as I like to fish for trout.
Just go fishing, and ask your questions here. We promise we won't laugh too hard. We were newbies once. ;-)
If you want info on smallmouth bass flies or if you would like a couple of flies to try send me an e-mail.
Regards,
Tim Murphy

Nate,
Same thing here in QC. I used to (when I had more time) fish for all the local stuff on a flyrod.
In mid summer, walleyes IMHO are EASIER to get on a flyrod 'n full sink line.
Wolly buggers (no bead please) and a figure 8 retrieve off a shelf. Walleyes don't take 'n turn, ... they come up behind the "bait" and inhale it. This subtle take is easily felt on a fly rod.
Pike on a fly is a blast too.
JC has the right reply too. We do it our way. Not an elitist attitude, ... just a way of life.
I only fish on a salmon river now, but it's a family choice. We go out to spend time together, not just to catch fish.

"I've often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before" A.K.Best
"Wish ya great fishing"

No shortage of flyfishers (or wannabees) here. Too many at times

Fly fishermen are pretty rare in my neck of the woods, and we do draw some funny looks. . . and comments. The people that stop to ask me about fly fishing or just make small chat are often suprised when I strip my fly in and show them a bass streamer that's bigger than the plug they're throwing, or a trout or panfish fly that they can hardly see. "You mean the fish are supposed to eat that thing?!" LOL

I thought I was alone when I got started but have found that there are a lot of people who 1)fly fish sometime or 2)always wanted to learn but never had anyone to show them. I have taken fly tying classes at a couple of stores and talked to the people behind the counters till they were sick of me. I have found that there is an organization I could join if I had the time. So... people are out there. Having said that, I fished 3 hours Sat. morning. The lakes were covered with mist. I caught bluegill, baby largemouth and a Big largemouth. Although it was a public place, I did not see another soul for the whole morning. I have had baitcasters tell me that bluegills were biting on worms and have caught them as fast as I could cast without the problem of rebaiting each time. When all is said and done, fly fishing is worth the solitude if you want it and worth the comraderie if you seek it. IMHO.

Hard for me to say considering the high concentration of them visiting and living here. I have heard that overall numbers are shrinking steadily.

There is a small park near my home in downtown (ish) Chicago and from time to time I'll grab the dog and my small rod and go aggrivate the pan fish and bass. The looks I get you'd think I have a disease...
