CDC type 1-4
Just read this article:
http://www.flyfisherman.com/ftb/hwcdc/index.html[/url:e17b1]
that classifies CDC feathers type 1-4. Oiler puffs (type 3) can be purchased separately, but otherwise I think you have to examine the feathers to decide if you're buying types 1, 2, or 3.
This makes it tough to purchase over the internet, and I suspect the CDC I can purchase locally is mostly type 4. Right now, I'm mainly interested in tying the CDC & Elk in smaller sizes -- for which "type 1" CDC is recommended.
Where do you regular CDC tiers get your CDC?

BFB,
The Type 1-4 classification is simply my own designed for ease of instruction and recipes. You are unlikely to find CDC packaged as such.
The best feathers (mix of types) come straight off the bird. If you do not have access to 'source', then the best commercial offering I have found to date are the Harrop Select CDC, in bulk packages. Either try Trouthunter ( http://www.trouthunt.com[/url:bb085] ), or Harry Mason ( http://www.troutflies.com[/url:bb085] ).
If you do have access to 'source', i.e. the birds, then CDC sizes are tied to bird size. For the smaller Type 1 feathers, I suggest you try smaller species such as Greenwing Teal or Woodduck.
Good luck,
Hans W

I was tying a bunch of CDC and Elk patterns last night and I must agree with Hans. The TroutHunter CDC packs represent the best choice. I have CDC packs from a number of different distributors and the CDC from the TroutHunter offers the best selection of feathers in a package. They offer a ton of different colors and you can purchase a "big" package of feathers that should last you a season or two. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif
Dan Bailey's also sells the CDC packages.
