Madison River
I fished the Madison over the weekend and I'd post this in the fishing reports section if anyone actually read that board. Started Friday in the park, not fishing, but seeing the sights. Saw one of the first bison calfs of the year:

Saturday we floated from Varney to Ennis and the fishing was a bit slow but we did manage several nice fish, mostly on San Juan worms but I took a nice bow on a glo-bug. Yeah, kind of white trash fly-fishing but what did you do this weekend? This was the best fish (thought not the best picture):

Sunday (today) we fished on foot, and if you know where this place is, you need not post that information here. Fishing was good with nymphs but nothing on top. I hooked what I believe to be the biggest trout I've ever had on the end of my line in Montana, and it got off before I saw it. Today:

Also saw some steam coming out of the earth in Norris:

All in all I think it's a little early for the epic fishing on the Madison, in case you're wondering, but the action was hot enough to keep me interested all day.

I also fished on the Madison this weekend, but I was down by Ennis.

mfa, what was your experience, I was by Ennis on Sat and did pretty well but I'm wondering how other folks did because I didn't talk to anyone else. Is there something that I could have done differently to increase my catch? That is what I'm wondering.

Double nymph rigs with stonefly patterns and PT or midge droppers were solid on Saturday and good on Sunday for me. I focused on this approach because I am comfortable with it, but it also works well this time of year and again in the fall. I got a handful of halfhearted hits on streamers on Saturday. I saw few risers but, at times, there were lots of midges and baetis around. The wind was difficult, especially on Sunday a.m. Wade into productive water and keep your nymphs in the zone.

Nice report Benjo and I loved the pics. Looks like the fishing on the Upper Madison was better than the fishing on the Lower Madison. The section below Ennis Lake, especially Beartrap Canyon hasnt fished very well for me this year. It might have something to do with the water being very off color.
I agree that stonefly nymphs and a nymph of your choice are very productive. A bugger might also have done the trick too.
By the way I know the spot you dont want mentioned http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/smile.gif . Beautiful area. I tried there about three weeks ago and did lousy but I have found it to be hit or miss at that spot. It looks like a lot of the snow there had disappeared from when I was there.

Take care everyone and cya around. Mark
