Epeorus Grandis?? Western Dun I believe may be a Pale Evening Dun

It is difficult to find much about this insect. I took this photo of it on the Madison River this summer just upstream of the WestFork.

I BELIEVE it is an Epeorus Grandis. I further believe it may be what we commonly call a Pale Evening Dun. I do know it is called different things, including Little Marryats.

If it is a Pale Evening Dun, it is my understanding that they tend to hatch below the surface......drift.....and then break surface and fly off quickly. For this reason, I believe a wet fly is the more productive pattern.

Here is the imago stage I photographed and a little soft hackle I think might be a good pattern for it. Even made it with a pronounced head (if that matters).

Let me know what you think. I can't find a great deal about this insect in my mayfly books or even on the internet.

Your imitations should work.

If you go by the id guide at http://www.west-fly-fishing.com/foru...99790&page=all, the veins on the wing are wrong for it to be e.grandis.

You couldn't prove it my me, either way.

I submitted the photo of the insect to "Troutnut.com". It is believed to be a Heptagenia. I guess it would be the "Western Ginger Quill".....a Heptagenia elegantula.

Same family, that's not bad.
