Did you burn that CD on that computer?
If not you may need to format the CD.
Yes I burned it on this computer, but formatting will cause me to loose the information on the cd.

Sorry Rick....I'm not real high tech ....the word I wanted was "finalize"..my understanding is it shouldn't be necessary if it was burned on that computor.
Ducksterman, you may be on to something.
Rick, what software did you use to burn the CD? Some software leaves the CD 'open' and only readable on a computer that has that software loaded unless you have 'finalized' the disk. If, by chance, you have deleted the software on your computer or reloaded your system recently, that could be the problem. Load the software that you used to create the CD and see if that helps. If you used the generic XP burning software, then that's a different story.
To help everyone troubleshoot, what exactly is the error you're getting? Will it not read anything on the disk or just certain files? Are there any visible scratches on the disk? If scratches are visible on the burned area, then you may try (as a last resort) to use one of the disk 'scrubbers' that will remove scratches but make the disk look really bad. When you clean the disk prior to insertion, be sure and wipe from the center outward - not around the disk as you would think. This is less likely to produce scratches that will prevent data loss.
Good luck in your efforts.

The most simple test is to try reading the disk on another computer. If that does not work also than the disk is #%@^&*(&^*&^. However that is quite rare. It does not matter if the disk was finalized or not. Long time ago burning software was capable of burning only one to a CD regardles how much data you wanted to write. If you did not write ful;l 650 MegaBytes then the reast was just wasted. All modern software is capable of "pocket writing" which simply means that it can wrilte muliple times to the same disk. "Finalizing " is a process of marking CD as full and therefore you cannot write any additional information to that disk. Regular CD-R cannot be formated only rewritables and using these makes not much sense when you consider cost of regular CD being between 10 and 20 cents and extrta time it takes to "rewrite" the disk.. If the info is outdated you just write a new one.
Is this a CD and DVD drive? If so go to Windows Explorer, c: drive and click on your drive. Then right click properties, click on the recording tap and make sure "Enable CD recording on this drive" is checked. This gave me problems once. Just a thought.
