Has anyone tried to weight the Crackleback?
Which would be the best way to weight it--just wrap round, or parallel to and alongside the hook shank?
Thanks

Wrapping ultra fine lead wire would give you the most weight, and not necessarily make the body too bulky. If all you have is thick wire, then you should tie it along the side. I generally fish this as a wet fly rather than a nymph. So instead of weighting it, I like to use it as a dropper off of a copper john.
Just my 2 cents,
Chris

Ed Story of Feather-Craft, who invented the Crackleback in the '50s, also sells a bead head Crackleback in the catalog, which I have tied. However, with all the hackle on the fly, I have had to put some lead wire wraps under the bead head to get it down. By keeping the wraps under the bead the fly keeps its thin profile.
